
Water Agency Engineering Technician I - Extra-Help

Do you have experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS)? If so, apply today to be an Extra-Help Engineering Technician I at the Sonoma County Water Agency (Sonoma Water). The Water Agency Engineering Technician I is the entry-level class within the Sonoma Water Engineering Technician series. In this Extra-Help role, the Engineering Technician will use ArcGIS Pro to georeference flight lines for historic aerial photographs, supporting project planning, data accuracy, and archival work.
Responsibilities
Utilizing Python scripting to automate geoprocessing tasks.
Researching historic aerial photo information and archival storage methods.
Scanning paper flight line maps and georeferencing the digitized maps using GIS software.
Creating spatial layers of scanned flight lines and coordinating with other agencies that work with historic aerial photos.
Working with the GIS Team to determine appropriate storage locations for data.
Qualifications and Experience
Knowledge of GIS, databases, Python scripting, and/or ESRI ArcGIS Pro.
Some knowledge of historic aerial photos and archiving GIS.
The ability to stay on track with projects while communicating effectively with both the team and the supervisor.
Experience organizing and maintaining GIS datasets and metadata.
Any combination of education and work experience that would provide the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and abilities listed. This normally includes college-level coursework, or equivalent training, in plane geometry, trigonometry, algebra, CADD, civil engineering, and surveying, or related fields; and one year of entry level paraprofessional experience in surveying, traffic, and/or engineering support work. An Associate's degree, Bachelor's degree, or equivalent with a major in a relevant field is highly desirable.
Possession of a valid driver's license at the appropriate level, including special endorsements, as required by the State of California, may be required depending on assignment to perform the essential job functions of the position.
Working knowledge of engineering principles, practices, and methods of technical civil engineering, drafting, soil and sample collection and testing, and/or surveying office and field support; routine procedures for testing construction materials; Water Agency safety practices and procedures; surveying, drafting, and CADD equipment; methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in engineering construction; applicable federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations; principles of algebra, geometry, and trigonometry; electronic information systems; principles and procedures of recordkeeping; technical report writing practices and procedures; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships; and computers and software programs (e.g., Microsoft software packages).
Ability to perform limited drafting, surveying, material testing, and engineering calculations; apply elementary principles of algebra, geometry, and trigonometry to calculate areas, quantities, or curves; prepare plans, specifications, maps, graphic materials, cost estimates, and technical engineering reports; research and analyze legal descriptions related to properties; use engineering, drafting, and surveying instruments and equipment; use a wide variety of computer applications; clearly and accurately convey technical information in written reports; read and understand technical descriptions; and apply all pertinent laws, codes, regulations, policies, procedures, and standards relevant to work performed.
Follow oral and written directions; work cooperatively with other staff; utilize electronic information systems and analyze and interpret such information; and communicate effectively both in writing and orally with persons from a variety of socio-economic, cultural, and educational backgrounds.

Sonoma Water is a special district formed by the California State Legislature in 1949 and is responsible for providing a safe and reliable water supply to its customers in Sonoma and Marin counties. Sonoma Water also maintains 75 miles of flood control channels and provides sanitation services. Employing approximately 250 employees, Sonoma Water consists of seven divisions including Engineering and Resource Planning, Environmental Resources, Community and Government Affairs, Water and Wastewater Operations, Maintenance, and Administrative Services.
