Position Overview
Under direct supervision of the clinic supervisor and the general supervision of the clinic providers, the Medical Assistant performs work which requires specific knowledge and training in patient care duties within the Business and Professions Code of California and the Joint Commission regulations. These duties include front‑office management, appointment scheduling, patient check‑in, authorizations, accurate billing, payment processing, supply chain and forms management. Back‑office duties involve equipment management, environmental care, cleaning and disinfection.
The position requires knowledge of medical terminology, procedures, universal precautions, proper use of body mechanics, initiative, ability to prioritize demands, and teamwork. The assistant may also be required to perform testing that may include audiograms, ECGs, forensic urine drug screens, venipuncture and specimen processing, TB skin testing, equipment calibration, vaccine administration, and patient treatment assistance. Electronic medical record software is used for charting, screening for medical issues, translation services (bilingual English/Spanish), and chart preparation. Occasionally the assistant may float to other departments to assist.
Minimum Qualifications
Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or certificate of completion of a Medical Assistant training program.
BART or BLS at time of hire with commitment to obtain BART within six (6) months of hire date.
Minimum two (2) years of experience as an MA in an ambulatory medical practice.
Experience in mental health and/or addiction treatment setting.
Knowledge of medical terminology, online scheduling, universal precautions, and proper use of body mechanics.
Ability to function in a fast‑paced environment, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and consistently demonstrate empathy and kindness to all staff and patients.
Professionalism, credibility, commitment to high standards, innovation, discriminating judgment, and accountability.
Strong computer literacy.
Ability to take initiative, prioritize demands, and work in a team environment.
Experience in a fast‑paced, multispecialty clinic.
Scheduling experience.
Proven knowledge of the patient flow process to efficiently monitor appointments, patients, and available physicians.
Ability to work as a team member.
Flexibility with varying demands in a small specialty clinic.
Preferred Qualifications
Five (5) years of recent experience as an MA.
Medication prior authorization experience.
Experience assisting with procedures.
Experience with EPIC and Cadence module.
Experience managing EPIC InBasket.
Experience working with senior population.
Experience working with vulnerable patient populations.
Special Conditions
Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs.
Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre‑employment physical.
Pay Transparency
Annual Full Pay Range: $52,847 - $65,772 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%).
Hourly Equivalent: $25.31 - $31.50.
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The hiring pay scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The annual full pay range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
