Job Title
Heavy Duty Mechanic, Automotive, Advanced Journey/Lead
Responsibilities
Professionally maintain all heavy‑duty and light‑duty equipment and vehicles associated with the construction and maintenance of secondary roads, rural airports, and other user agency vehicles operated in the area.
Resolve unusual or complex equipment problems through a variety of techniques and methods, performing routine and specialized repair and maintenance on a variety of heavy equipment.
Diagnose, maintain, repair, and modify transmissions, drive trains, suspension, engine and emission systems, fuel injection, hydraulic systems, and brake systems, including air and electrical, for light and heavy‑duty equipment.
Qualifications and Competencies
Mechanical : Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, benefits, repair, and maintenance.
Flexibility : Open to change and new information; rapidly adapts to new information, changing conditions, or unexpected obstacles.
Vehicle Maintenance : Knowledge of motor vehicle engines, parts, and systems, including their design, uses, repair, and maintenance.
Self‑Management : Sets well‑defined and realistic personal goals; displays a high level of initiative, effort, and commitment towards completing assignments in a timely manner; works with minimal supervision; is motivated to achieve; demonstrates responsible behavior.
Essential Requirements
Commercial Driver’s License (Class A) per federal regulations (49 CFR 383); must possess a valid Class A CDL and register with the federal CDL Drug & Alcohol Testing Clearinghouse prior to performing safety‑sensitive duties. Appointment is conditional until the applicant obtains a Class A Alaska CDL within 120 days of hire.
Must pass a pre‑employment drug test and comply with the DOT & PF Drug and Alcohol Policy; cannot start work in a CDL position until confirmation of passing the required test.
Tool allowance: employees are required to provide their own hand tools and will receive a bi‑weekly tool allowance as determined by LTC contract.
Arms & Ammunition Requirement: Position requires the use of firearms or ammunition; candidates with a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence are ineligible.
Travel: May involve traveling in small planes to maintain equipment in remote locations; travel consists of day trips and overnight stays.
