Position Overview
The Benefits Consultant Generalist provides adaptable, cross‑functional support across core benefits functions. This role delivers consultations and case management for leaves of absence, retirement processing, onboarding and off‑boarding activities, and related benefits administration. High‑volume inquiries and time‑sensitive casework are managed with accurate application of federal, state, and university policies. Coverage during peak workloads, staff absences, and overlapping deadlines helps maintain timely, compliant service for employees throughout the employment lifecycle.

Responsibilities

Leave of Absence (30%): Guide employees on LOA options, eligibility, benefits, and required processes; review applications and medical documentation; consult on continuations, conversions, and waivers; coordinate with Employee Relations; monitor case data for accuracy, compliance, and billing; produce related reports.

Retirement (30%): Consult employees on retirement options and eligibility; provide benefit calculations for TSERS, LEO benefits, ORP, phased retirement, and FRIP; advise on retiree health insurance, Medicare Parts A and B, NC Flex, and UNC System benefits; manage supplemental retirement plans; process retirement forms, documentation, and system entries; support special separation allowance calculations and presentations.

Onboarding / Off‑boarding (30%): Conduct orientations and benefits consultations; assist with benefits enrollment, documentation, and platform tasks; advise on termination‑related benefits, COBRA, and vendor contacts; monitor separation reporting and adjust deductions; support RIF actions and DSR requests.

Other Benefits Support (10%): Process HR service cases through HR Connect; research and interpret benefits policies; maintain process documentation and support improvements; handle qualifying life events; assist with open enrollment and other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Related bachelor’s degree and at least two years of HR benefits experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience (degrees from accredited institutions).

Advanced Excel skills.

Strong written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Broad benefits administration experience, including state programs, leave of absence, retirement, and onboarding/off‑boarding support.

Strong Excel and systems proficiency.

Public sector experience.

Excellent written and verbal communication, including presentations to diverse audiences.

Salary and Location
Salary range: $61,000 – $66,000. Permanent full‑time position. Work schedule: 8:00 am‑5:00 pm, Monday to Friday, with occasional evening and weekend hours. Location: King Building.
