Recreation Fitness Manager
General Description: The Recreation Fitness Manager plays a key role by developing and leading high-quality fitness and wellness opportunities for the community. The position is responsible for the overall operation of fitness programs and facilities, supervision of staff, and delivery of services that promote health, wellness, and community engagement.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Plan, implement, and evaluate a variety of fitness and wellness programs for youth, adults, and seniors.
Oversee daily operations of the fitness center, including staffing, cleanliness, safety, and equipment maintenance; recruit, train, supervise, schedule, and support part-time staff and instructors.
Maintain recreation software systems and mobile applications, ensuring accurate program information and registration; maintain records, reports, and program data and support membership engagement and retention strategies.
Plan, schedule, and evaluate group exercise offerings based on participation trends and community needs; monitor class participation and adjust schedules to improve utilization and service quality; ensure instructors maintain required certifications and risk‑management standards.
Support membership growth by expanding offerings and increasing participation; ensure programs are accessible, inclusive, and aligned with community needs and interests.
Manage and update the department website with current content; support front-line staff with fitness-related member questions and concerns.
Assist with budget development and monitor program revenues and expenditures.
Build partnerships with local organizations, schools, and health providers.
Fiscal Responsibilities
Annual budget total value: $2,500. Funds, facilities & equipment total value: $5,000.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervise a small group (3–7) of employees; assign and check work; provide instruction as required; perform same work as those supervised or closely related work.
Occasionally responsible for organizational property where misappropriation would result in moderate damage or monetary loss, with a total value ranging from $5,000 to $150,000.
Education and Experience
Education: Four-year college degree, or equivalent experience resulting in broad knowledge of a field related to the job such as accounting, marketing, business administration, agriculture, etc.
Experience General: 5 years related experience and/or training.
Experience Management: 3 years related management experience.
Work Skills
Analytical Ability/Problem Solving: Moderately repetitive tasks with slight variation.
Planning: Considerable responsibility for general assignments in planning time, method, manner, or sequence of performance of own work and for the work operations of a group of employees performing mainly similar work.
