Overall Objective
The Histotechnician is responsible for preparing tissue samples for microscopic examinations by pathologists. This role involves grossing, processing, embedding, sectioning, and staining biological specimens while maintaining high standards of accuracy, quality, and safety. The Histotechnician will coordinate daily workflow of tasks and activities in the surgical pathology area with regard to routine procedures, special procedures and the surgery schedule. The Histotechnician plays a critical role in supporting diagnostic, research, and clinical laboratory operations.

Principal Activities and Expected End Results

Receive, accession, and verify patient tissue specimens.

Gross, fix, process, and embed tissue samples in paraffin.

Perform microtomy to cut thin tissue sections for slide preparation.

Stain slides using routine (e.g., H&E) and special staining techniques (IHC).

Ensure proper labeling and documentation of all specimens and slides.

Maintain laboratory equipment and troubleshoot minor issues.

Follow established laboratory protocols and quality control measures.

Assist pathologists and laboratory staff with additional testing as needed.

Maintain accurate records in laboratory information systems (LIS).

Follow laboratory safety protocols and comply with regulatory standards (e.g., CLIA, CAP, OSHA

Perform other duties as assigned in support of clinical excellence, operational effectiveness and patient-centered care.

Requirements
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Experience

Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in Histotechnology, Biology, or a related field.

Completion of a NAACLS-accredited Histotechnician program preferred.

Certification as a Histotechnician (HT) by ASCP (or eligibility) preferred.

Knowledge of histological techniques, laboratory safety, and quality control.

Strong attention to detail and manual dexterity.

Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Experience

Proficiency in microtomy and staining procedures.

Familiarity with laboratory equipment and maintenance.

Strong organizational and time-management skills.

Effective communication and documentation abilities.

Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information.

Maintain CEU’s according to lab policy as deemed by Medical Director.

Prior Work Experience
Prior hands‑on experience in a histology or pathology lab performing tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, staining and slide preparation. Experience in hospital, physician practice or diagnostic lab handling chain of custody, safety protocols and quality standards.

Physical Requirements

Clinical laboratory, Same Day Surgery Center, or research setting.

Exposure to chemicals, biological specimens, and laboratory equipment.

Requires standing or sitting for extended periods and performing repetitive tasks

Ability to stand for long periods.

Fine motor skills for handling small instruments and specimens.

Ability to lift and move light laboratory equipment up to 25 pounds.

Other Information
Exhibits strong initiative, personal accountability, and ability to independently identify improvement opportunities.

This is a part‑time position. Department works Monday through Friday - flexible working hours.
