Position Summary
Patient Care Technician – KP 10 Surgery Night Shift (37.5 hours). Assists professional nurses in patient and family care, supports unit maintenance, and demonstrates NYU Langone Health core values.

Job Responsibilities

Demonstrate knowledge of NYU Langone Core Values, incorporate them into duties.

Respect patient confidentiality, privacy, dignity, and rights.

Account for supplies, equipment, and environmental support.

Assist in collection of data for the unit’s Quality and Performance Improvement Program.

Assist the nurse in review and corrective action plans regarding patient/family response and satisfaction.

Recognize own limitations and request assistance when needed.

Discuss educational concerns and goals with the Nurse Manager or leadership.

Seek learning resources for identified learning needs.

Participate in orientation of new patient care technicians and unit meetings.

Complete annual mandatory education requirements.

Demonstrate awareness of needs and behaviors across patient age groups and cultures.

Support unit activities as requested, including in emergency situations.

Utilize specialized skills safely (phlebotomy, fingersticks for glucose, ECG).

Follow infection prevention and control standards.

Assist with admission, transfer, and discharge procedures per unit operations.

Communicate responsiveness and support to patients, families, and staff.

Observe general behavior and report to the registered nurse.

Assist patients in activities per Performance Standards.

Complete delegated responsibilities directed by the registered nurse.

Use clear, caring, respectful communication with patients, families, and team.

Answer patient call lights promptly, complete assistance requests, and report beyond scope to the professional nurse.

Provide security of patients’ personal property, handle valuables per procedure.

Maintain unit cleanliness, including utility rooms, refrigerators, and patient areas.

Assist team members (registered nurses, LPNs, physicians, etc.).

Help prepare patients for scheduled appointments (stretcher or wheelchair).

Run errands to other departments, including specimen and equipment delivery.

Ensure necessary equipment and supplies are present in patient rooms and on unit.

Minimum Qualifications

High school graduate or equivalent.

Patient Care Technician certification upon hire or transfer.

BLS certification (American Heart Association) or Heartsaver CPR/AED certification upon entry.

Working knowledge of English (verbal, reading, writing); other language an asset.

Computer skills proficiency.

Proficiency in venipuncture and phlebotomy required.

Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of the organization.

Salary range: $57,185.94 annually, inclusive of standard compensation. Actual salaries depend on experience, specialty, education, and hospital need.
