Chief Supervisor, Public Works
Responsibilities
Oversees and coordinates the supervision of the activities of skilled and semi-skilled and other workers engaged in the daily duties in the assigned segment as set forth by the head of the division.
Plans, proposes and implements approved work activities, provides and develops training, and oversees the safety programs for the subordinates of all direct reports, ensuring compliance with all regulations.
Checks on work in progress and directs corrective actions.
Submits budget estimates and helps control expenditures.
Responsible for recommending personnel actions such as scheduling workers, approving leave, conducting job interviews, hiring new employees, pay raises, promotions and other personnel actions.
Implements and trains direct reports and their subordinates on City policies and procedures.
Receives, investigates and responds to inquiries and complaints from citizens and other members of the public.
Compiles, reviews and submits all reports as needed.
Performs other duties as required or assigned.
Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in a related field from an accredited college or university, or the equivalent in work experience.
Seven (7) years of progressively more responsible experience in supervising and coordinating a majority of tasks listed below in the applicable Division for which the position is advertised.
Solid Waste Division: Solid Waste Management to include refuse collection, landfill operations, routing procedures, and recycling: driving -operating and/or servicing light and heavy equipment.
Basic computer skills, such as typing, writing reports, and sending and receiving email.
Ability to promote teamwork amongst subordinates.
Hold a current and valid commercial driver's license, type A or B.
Hold or be able to obtain the specific class certificates that is required depending on assigned division.
Customer service skills.
Physical Requirements
Regularly required to use hands to finger, handle or feel.
Frequently required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arm, climb to perform work in manholes, pits or water towers.
Frequently required to bend, squat, stoop or perform work in tight places or a confined space.
Must consistently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, 50 pounds frequently and 100 pounds occasionally.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include near vision, far vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
Must have the physical ability to operate all required equipment and perform work in confined spaces.
Work Environment
Employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions.
Must be able to work long consecutive hours as required by the nature of the emergency.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
Travel
Extensive local travel required to accomplish job assignments and visit job sites.
