
Assistant Manager of Surgery/Operating Room

Overview
Position: Assistant Perioperative Manager (RN) - Operating Room | Assistant Manager of OR/Operating Room (RN) | OR Assistant Manager. Department: DPH Surgery. Status: Full-Time. Shift: Four 10-hour shifts.
Option 1: Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday
Option 2: Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday
Start time: Between 7:00 AM and 8:00 AM
Orlando Health Dr. P. Phillips Healthcare is a full-service medical/surgical facility serving southwest Orange County and Orlando. The role supports surgical services within a 285-bed environment with multiple specialties, including diagnostic imaging, cardiovascular care, orthopedic care, surgical services and emergency medicine. In 2025, the onsite Team Member Wellness Center was opened to support employee health and well-being.
Responsibilities
Responsible for the day-to-day operations of surgical cases to ensure delivery of quality service and optimal patient flow.
Coordinate staffing needs and review coverage daily to meet patient care requirements.
Collaborate with the surgical control desk liaison, anesthesia, pre-op, and PACU to assure optimal flow of daily case load and adherence to productivity targets.
Monitor schedules to identify special equipment or supplies needs.
Collaborate with physicians on processes for implementing new procedures and technology and requests for new equipment/supplies.
Monitor vendor accessibility and participation in scheduled cases to ensure compliance with OR policies and procedures.
Monitor utilization of surgeon block time and operating room suite use as directed.
Maintain current list of surgeons, monitor credentials, and update preference cards.
Collaborate with the Nursing Operations Manager, Administrator, and Physicians to identify current and future service line needs.
Demonstrate professional accountability by maintaining proficiency in the circulator role and assigned responsibilities.
Identify future equipment needs or replacements as needed.
Participate in MEOC activities with surgeons to evaluate and pilot equipment and supplies; promote standardization of surgical supplies where possible.
Operate all specialty instruments, supplies, and equipment in designated service lines as directed.
Collaborate with vendors to provide in-service training to staff on new equipment, procedures, and changes in technology.
Provide in-services for SPD staff regarding cleaning and sterilization of instruments and accessories as directed.
Communicate with Materials Management and SPD staff to ensure routine inventories and prescribed levels of sterile and non-sterile supplies are maintained.
Assist with clinical evaluation of team members; complete written clinical performance evaluations and timely assessments.
Participate in hiring and evaluation of potential team members.
Cultivate exemplary customer service throughout the unit/department.
Monitor compliance of certifications, licenses, and required education for team members as directed.
Plan and evaluate compliance with organizational and regulatory policies and procedures.
Manage human resources functions including hiring, work assignments, coaching plans, and performance counseling.
Maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with policies and applicable laws, and comply with all Orlando Health policies and procedures.
Qualifications
Education/Training
Must obtain a Bachelor of Science within 36 months of placement in role.
Assume responsibility for professional development and continuing education.
Meets all mandatory and developmental requirements for Orlando Health and unit/department.
Licensure/Certification
Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS).
Nursing or Surgical Technologist for Nursing: maintain current professional license as a registered nurse in the State of Florida. For Surgical Technologist: Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) by NBSTSA or Tech in Surgery - Certified by NCCT, renewed as specified.
Experience
Two (2) years of experience as a registered nurse in a surgical area or surgical tech required.
One (1) year of experience in surgery leadership (e.g., manager, assistant manager, supervisor, charge, or team lead) required.
