Job Summary
A Vision Services Assistant (V.S.A.) is a member of the Eye Services team, providing direct support to providers (ophthalmologists and optometrists) and assisting the Eye Services operation under the supervision of the Chief of Ophthalmology or designee.
The V.S.A.'s primary role is to enhance provider interactions with patients, applying specific knowledge, objective ophthalmic testing, and technical skills in the Eye Services specialty. The V.S.A. maximizes flexible operations by assisting provider visits and supporting department operations with clerical services such as making appointments, scheduling surgical procedures, taking messages, and registering patients.
Essential Responsibilities
Measures and records intraocular pressure (tonometry), neutralization of spectacles (lensometry), automated visual fields, autorefraction, autokeratometry, anterior chamber angles, vital signs, pupillary response, and other objective ophthalmic testing procedures.
Measures complete visual acuities for all ages and ocular diagnoses, including Snellen charts, HOTV charts, color vision, and stereopsis.
Administers topical eye medications per physician orders, preparing patients for testing as permitted by state law and regulation.
Performs other objective ophthalmic testing and automated image capture as indicated.
Creates, cancels, and schedules Optometry, Ophthalmology, medical clearance, and diagnostic appointments.
Obtains and prepares the appropriate medical information (records, files, forms, diagnostic results) for the provider and records relevant medical information into the provider’s chart.
Documents concise and relevant medical and ocular histories in the medical record.
Escorts patients to exam rooms, prepares them for examination, instructs them with relevant information per provider protocols, witnesses patient consent signatures, and signs forms.
Sets up laboratory, X‑ray, and other requisitions electronically, labels specimens, and follows departmental procedures.
Assists with minor surgical procedures of the eye: prepares supplies, handles instruments, anticipates provider needs, cleans, wraps, labels, and restocks instruments.
Maintains equipment, orders and stocks supplies, maintains inventory par levels, and keeps the work area clean.
Communicates with patients—calls with messages from providers, documents disposition—and updates records relating to provider appointments.
Performs surgical scheduling functions as needed, answers phones, makes appointments, and takes messages.
Maintains provider and department files.
Performs other related duties as necessary.
Basic Qualifications
Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program or an in‑house Kaiser Permanente Medical Assistant program; or have at least one year of experience as a Kaiser Permanente Medical Assistant; or have at least one year of recent experience assisting physicians or optometrists in an eye care setting.
Successfully complete PARRS II, AutoReg, and be able to work with an electronic medical record system.
Good verbal and written communication skills, including legible handwriting.
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively in teams.
Knowledge of computer and keyboard.
Willingness to work in a Labor Management Partnership environment.

High School Diploma/GED.
