Job Description
Provide safe patient monitoring for patients requiring safety sitting and/or suicide observation. The PST provides safe monitoring under the direction of the RN professional to all assigned patients. Assumes responsibility and accountability for patient safety as a team member in order to achieve established outcomes.
Responsible for providing continuous observation and appropriate documentation on activity of an assigned patient who has been identified as having increased risk for injury.
Principal Accountabilities
Provides ADL's and protects patients in sitter and spotter assignments from self‑harm and prevents elopements.
Makes continuous rounds.
Assists with Activities of Daily Living such as toileting and feeding.
Monitors patients for safety and suicide risk.
Orients patient and uses distraction techniques.
Recognizes behaviors of self‑harm and responds immediately.
Adheres to all infection prevention protocols.
Maintains a clean and safe patient room.
Travels with patients during off‑unit testing.
Documents electronic 1:1 suicide observation.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent.
Ability to provide continuous observation for extended periods of time.
Strong attention to detail and ability to remain alert and focused.
Effective verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to follow safety protocols, policies, and documentation standards.
Physical ability to assist patients with mobility and ADLs, including standing, walking, and repositioning.
Preferred Qualifications
Prior experience in a healthcare, hospital, behavioral health, or long‑term care setting.
Experience as a Patient Safety Technician, Nursing Assistant, Patient Care Technician, or similar role.
Experience working with patients at risk for falls, self‑harm, or elopement.
Strong teamwork, compassion, and patient‑centered care skills.
