Development Director
Calvary Women's Services offers housing, health, education, and employment programs that empower homeless women in Washington, DC, to transform their lives.
The Development Director leads the execution and management of Calvary's fundraising strategy in close partnership with the Chief Development Officer (CDO). This role oversees day-to-day fundraising operations, donor stewardship, corporate partnerships, and fundraising events, while managing and supporting members of the Development Team.
Reporting to the CDO, the Development Director plays a key role in strengthening Calvary's development systems, advancing donor relationships, and ensuring fundraising initiatives are executed effectively, consistently, and in alignment with organizational priorities.
Key Responsibilities:
Execute annual fundraising plans in collaboration with the CDO to meet revenue goals across individual giving, major gifts, corporate partnerships, and events
Monitor progress toward fundraising goals and adjust tactics as needed
Identify opportunities to strengthen fundraising systems, processes, and donor experience
Support the identification and development of new revenue opportunities in partnership with the CDO
Donor Stewardship & Major Gifts
Manage a portfolio of individual and major gift donors and prospects, including cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship
Lead donor engagement activities in collaboration with the Chief Development Officer, including major gift strategy and donor meetings
Implement and manage a moves management process, including prospect tracking and personalized stewardship plans
Oversee annual appeals and online campaigns, providing strategic guidance and execution support
Partner with Communications staff to ensure donor-facing messaging is consistent, compelling, and mission-aligned
Corporate Partnerships
Identify, cultivate, and secure new corporate sponsors and partners, while stewarding existing relationships
Expand corporate giving and sponsorship opportunities across events and campaigns
Lead sponsorship solicitation for fundraising events and initiatives
Special Events
Provide leadership and oversight for fundraising events, including the annual Hope Gala, fundraising walk, and donor engagement events
Oversee event planning timelines, budgets, vendors, and logistics
Collaborate with staff, volunteers, and consultants to ensure successful execution
Support volunteer engagement related to fundraising and events
Team Leadership & Supervision
Lead, mentor, and supervise Development team members, ensuring alignment with fundraising goals and professional development
Delegate responsibilities appropriately to support efficient execution and team sustainability
Supervise consultants supporting events, data, or other development initiatives
Data Management & Reporting
Oversee management of the donor database (CRM), ensuring accurate and timely tracking of gifts, donor activity, and engagement
Analyze fundraising and donor data to inform strategy, appeals, and stewardship efforts
Prepare reports, forecasts, and updates for the CDO and leadership team
Collaboration & Representation
Partner closely with Communications staff on development-related communications and campaigns
Lead donor tours, presentations, and community outreach as needed
Represent Calvary Women's Services at events and with external partners
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
57 years of experience in fundraising or development, preferably in a nonprofit setting
Demonstrated success executing fundraising strategies across multiple revenue streams
Experience managing and mentoring staff Strong relationship-building and communication skills
Experience overseeing donor databases and fundraising systems
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a collaborative, fast-paced environment
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in a related field or a minimum of 5-7 years relevant work experience
Work Environment Requirements:
Own transportation is required for trips out of the office
Move, lift, carry, push, pull, and place objects weighing less than or equal to 30 pounds without assistance
Reach overhead and below the knees, including bending, twisting, pulling, and stooping
Climbing: Ascending or descending multiple flights of stairs, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms
Stand, sit, or walk for an extended period
