Media Relations and Storytelling Manager
The Native American Rights Fund (NARF) is a non‑profit national Indian law firm representing Indian tribes, organizations, and individuals in important Indian law matters. This full‑time hybrid position is based in Boulder, CO; Anchorage, AK; or Washington, D.C., and requires that the candidate be located within commutable distance of the selected office.
Overview
The Media Relations and Storytelling Manager brings NARF’s mission and work to life through bold, accessible, and culturally relevant messaging. The role blends strategic communication, crisis management, and creative storytelling to shape public perception and drive engagement.
Responsibilities
Manage and triage incoming media requests and coordinate with reporters and organizational spokespeople for interviews.
Prepare all press materials, including press releases, pitches, media advisories, and written statements.
Write compelling case updates and summaries for the website and other NARF‑owned media.
Advise on framing written materials to make them compelling and accessible.
Monitor for misinformation and disinformation, and execute crisis communications strategies.
Track and report press coverage and refine media strategies.
Prepare staff and clients for media engagement and develop talking points.
Act as liaison and Communications champion for assigned Legal/Development teams and projects.
Engage in professional development to maintain expertise in media relations and nonprofit storytelling.
Support additional communications duties as needed, such as content creation for online/print publications, photography, video production, website maintenance, and other cross‑functional projects.
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in English, Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or related field (preferred).
5+ years of experience in marketing, communications, or public relations, preferably in nonprofit, legal, or tribal organizations.
Experience with media management and outreach.
Skills and Abilities
Clear, concise, and logical writing in AP style and legal writing (preferred).
Proven track record of compelling writing on legal, advocacy, justice, Native American, or similar topics.
Efficient work habits: meeting deadlines and honoring schedules.
Strong judgment, sensitivity, and ability to manage competing priorities in a fast‑paced environment.
Ability to work autonomously and independently.
Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to collaborate with attorneys, donors, vendors, board members, and tribal leaders.
Highly organized self‑starter comfortable in a fast‑moving organization.
Understanding of Indian Law and Tribal‑U.S. relations (preferred).
Familiarity with Native American culture and/or experience working with tribal nations or Indigenous peoples (preferred).
Availability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and some travel locally and nationally.
Ability to meet physical demands such as extended sitting, computer use, occasional lifting up to 50 lbs.
Salary and Benefits
Salary range: $105,700 to $127,300 annually, based on experience. The package includes health, dental, vision insurance, paid time off (vacation, sick, family, medical/disability leave), 401(k) employer contribution, group life insurance, accident insurance, and short‑ and long‑term disability insurance.
