The primary role of a Technical Writer is to support engagements by interviewing stakeholders, developing, editing and revising technical documentation for IT systems, driving the research and fact-gathering process, analyzing, and synthesizing findings, and developing deliverables for clients. This role also supports ROCIMG internal operations – marketing, business development and internal activities that are designed to advance the firm.

Position Requirements
Level I Responsibilities, Education, and Experience Requirements

Consults and works with client teams, software engineers, and technical staff to obtain a general understanding of scientific and technical information, documentation content, and requirements

Analyzes existing and potential content and suggests enhancements to content and its presentation

With minimal guidance, develops source material, diagrams, charts, and graphs that increase the user’s understanding

Standardizes content across document and briefing libraries

Develops high‑quality documentation with minimal guidance that is easy to understand, easy to use, meets applicable standards, and meets the objectives and goals for the intended audience

Collect, organize and assimilate the information required for creation and preparation of documents, training materials, guides, proposals, and reports

Perform formatting and technical edits to engineering documentation, software documentation, manuals, reports, or any other documents or presentations

Utilize strong writing, editing, and communication skills to analyze and present complex information in a format that is easy to read and understand

Edits completed written content for proper use of grammar, sentence structure, etc.

Migrates documents from different tools and formats to comply with updated document formats, quality and style guides, and repositories

Revises documents to remain current to the projects progress

Level I Formal Education, Certification, and Experience

Minimum 3 years technical writing and editing experience with a High School Diploma; or a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in English, Business or related discipline and with a minimum 1 year of technical writing and editing experience

Level II Responsibilities, Education, and Experience Requirements

All of Level I Responsibilities

Works with teams to obtain an in-depth understanding of scientific and technical information, documentation content, and requirements

With no guidance, develops diagrams, charts, and graphs that increase the user’s understanding

Develops high‑quality documentation with no guidance that is easy to understand, easy to use, meets applicable standards, and meets the objectives and goals for the intended audience

Revises documents to remain current to the progress of the project

Working knowledge of Section 508 compliance requirements

Develops content for digital delivery, e.g., electronic newsletters

Guides team members and ensures tasks are completed on time

Level II Formal Education, Certification, and Experience

4-6 years technical writing and editing experience with a High School Diploma; or a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in English, Business or related discipline and with 2-4 years of technical writing and editing experience

Level III Responsibilities, Education, and Experience Requirements

All of Level II Responsibilities

Possesses a thorough understanding of the scientific and technical subject matter, documentation content, and requirements

Recommends and develops content, diagrams, charts, and graphs that increase the user’s understandingDevelops project status reports and manages project and project plan

Level III Formal Education, Certification, and Experience

7+ years technical writing and editing experience with a High School Diploma; or a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in English, Business or related discipline and with 5+ years of technical writing and editing experience

Experience developing content for federal financial systems

Experience with the software development lifecycle

Experience with recommending and developing a variety of technical documentation based on client needs

Experience in leading or guiding more junior technical writers

Ideal Candidates Possess the Following Qualities

Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and excellent communications skills

Strong working knowledge in Microsoft Office and excellent writing skills; excellent oral and written communication skills, confidence, and a 'can-do' attitude

Strong computer skills (Adobe, Snagit, PowerPoint, MS Word)

Working knowledge of Adobe Robohelp

Able to understand clients’ needs and challenges and apply a creative and logical approach to identify solutions

Comfortable working on multiple tasks concurrently and meeting deadlines, while maintaining focus in an environment with conflicting demands

Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate and work effectively in a team environment, able to build direct working relationships with ROCIMG and client teams

Location

Gaithersburg, MD, Hybrid

Travel to client site may be required a few times per year for this position

Salary
Salary Range: $65K - $130K, + bonus. Final salary is determined by factors including, but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills and competencies that align to the specified role, geographic location, education and certifications.
