Position: Director, Minnetonka Concert Band

The Minnetonka Concert Band (MCB) is part of the Music Association of Minnetonka (MAM), bringing a concert band experience to this community-based music organization. This 50-member adult ensemble performs two Sunday afternoon concerts a year with 5-6 rehearsals prior to each concert. Since its beginning in 2003, this band has presented engaging concerts of high quality traditional and newer repertoire.
The MCB Conductor serves as the band leader: the primary creator of and the advocate for MCB’s artistic vision. This part‑time contract position requires approximately five consecutive (weekly) Wednesday evening rehearsals prior to each concert. Concerts take place on Sundays in late September/early October and mid-March. Rehearsals and concerts are held at the Arts Center at Minnetonka High School.
Responsibilities
Artistic Leadership
Inspire, articulate, and implement the MAM mission through MCB.
Conduct rehearsals and performances at a high level.
Generate creative program themes and supporting repertoire for each performance series.
Administrative Leadership
Collaborate with the MCB Advisory Committee on planning and operation of the band.
Assist MAM leadership and staff with public relations and fundraising efforts.
Communication
Build a collaborative environment in which the members feel connected to the ensemble.
Act as major decision‑maker for artistic issues that may arise within MCB.
Attend MCB Advisory Committee meetings as requested by the committee when provided with at least seven days’ notice.
Help develop lasting partnerships with the school district and City of Minnetonka.
Positively represent MAM in interactions with the community, general public, participants and volunteers.
Skills and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in music required, advanced degree in music preferred.
Conducting experience required.
Skill in assessing the abilities and potential of instrumental musicians.
Ability to conceptualize, organize, plan, and execute steps to reach desired musical product with given circumstances and personnel.
Comprehensive and diverse knowledge of concert band repertoire.
Ability to approach repertoire selection and concert performances in innovative ways that engage performers and audiences.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Leadership style emphasizing the building of consensus and cooperation.
Experience working with volunteers, including a governing Board of Directors.
Commitment to ongoing growth of music.
Compensation
$3,000 – $3,500 per year (2 series per year), depending on experience

Selection Process and Dates
After screening applications, we will invite selected candidates for interviews to be conducted in Aug. Finalists from the interviews will be invited to conducting auditions 0n Sept. 30 (evening), for an opportunity to conduct/rehearse a piece with the Minnetonka Concert Band. A final selection will be made soon after this audition rehearsal.
