Mayer Out at Volkswagen

kevinmayerHere’s a little client-side news for the impending lunch hour. A phone call has confirmed that Kevin Mayer, who’s spent the last 18 months serving as VP/marketing at Volkswagen of American, is no longer with the automaker. We’re also hearing VW may have also parted ways with another marketing exec, but we’re still waiting on confirmation. As for Mayer, the now-former VW VP was based out of the brand’s D.C.-area hub in Herndon, VA.

During his career, the exec, who just picked up an Adweek Brand Genius Award in September, also held several senior-level positions on the marketing/strategy side at fellow automakers such as Hyundai, General Motors and Subaru while also working early on in his career on the account side at agencies including MARS and Grey.

Volkswagen Swims with Sharks for a Week

Discovery’s annual Shark Week extravaganza not only confirms that viewers go crazy for underwater creatures that can rip them into a thousand pieces, but that brands will use just about any tangential connection to a popular theme to try and wring out that extra dollar. Take the fat, colorful Tide billboard above the Lincoln Tunnel that I came across yesterday: “We get the blood out, too.” That’s one way to do it.

Volkswagen and Deutsch are going all in as well, bringing cars and sharks a lot closer than they’ve ever been before, a true sharknado of brand association if there ever was one. The VW campaign is loaded on social media, mainly focusing on sharable videos through Instagram and Vine. VW created a Beetle convertible that will be used as an underwater cage hooked up to cameras for the remainder of the week, hoping to conquer a chunk of the digital space floating around with these exclusive videos. Now, It’s Goodby’s Turn to Celebrate the Chevy ‘Centennial’

Now that we’ve got the whole Mother/Chevy/Goodby confusion out of the way (we hope), here’s the previously mentioned “Centennial” work from GS&P that broke during game one of the World Series last night. The spot, which is called “Then & Now” and was created in conjunction with Park Pictures and director/DP Lance Acord, celebrates the automotive brand that was founded on November 3, 1911 by Swiss immigrant Louis Chevrolet and U.S. entrepreneur Billy Durant. While it’s all nice and tender and all, commenters on YouTube are already calling foul, claiming this ad is ripping off the blog, Dear Photograph. Well, at least the “Let’s Do This” Chevy Sonic work that Goodby is also behind is fairly novel. What say you, readers? Credits after the jump.
