In a first-of-its-kind deal for Twitter, The Weather Channel will now have access to tweets about local weather across the US, and will display this on its TV broadcast, website, and iPhone app.
This deal means that next time you log on to Weather.com, you’ll not only see what the weatherman predicted about your local weather, but you’ll also see tweets from your neighbors about the impending fog, the harsh winds and the scorching sun.
As the Wall Street Journal reports, Citibank will sponsor the weather tweets, and may display its logo in and around the tweet module. And while Twitter and The Weather Channel say they will split revenue, the terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Twitter reports that, on any given day, there are 200 tweets about the weather across the US… per minute. And that number can rise to as many as 2 million on a day with a significant weather event like a tornado or hurricane.
On Weather.com, the tweet integration will appear as a module with live tweets from people in a particular region. If you were searching for the weather in New York, for instance, you’d see weather-related tweets from fellow New Yorkers.
During its broadcasts on TV, The Weather Channel will discuss the sentiment of certain groups of tweets, and which terms (such as “humid”) are being used more frequently at any given time.
This deal means more revenue for Twitter, which is needed in a time where the company is valued at over $8 billion but is likely to only bring in $150 million in ad revenue this year.
