Social media comes with a pretty steep learning curve, and for brands looking to implement these tools into their marketing and customer support strategy it can quickly become overwhelming. Where on earth do you begin?
A new survey has unveiled the ten most annoying types of social media status update, with users who endlessly write and boast about exercise or weight loss ranking as the biggest irritants across Twitter and Facebook. Moreover, the study, undertaken by fitness e-commerce site Sweatband.com, discovered that more than half (52 percent) of UK social networkers had decreased the amount of time they spend on social media sites because of irksome updates from friends and family – and 38 percent had quit at least one social site altogether.
Did you know that Britney Spears, Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber have more Twitter followers than the entire populations of Sweden, Israel, Greece, Chile and Australia… combined? What if I told you that if Facebook was a country, it would be the third largest in the world? Or that someone signs up for a new account at LinkedIn every single second? Would you be amazed to know that if Wikipedia was made into a book, it would be more than two million pages long and take 123 years to read?
Social media advertising is big business – Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter combined for well over five billion dollars in ad revenue in 2012. But while spending on social media ads continues to rise – 81 percent of agencies and 75 percent of advertisers implemented social media ads in their campaigns last year – measuring the impact of these tools continues to prove problematic. Indeed, 62 of advertisers, and 70 percent of agencies, are either unsure or flat-out do not know how to measure their social marketing ROI.
Visual social media marketing is the practice of using video, images and other visual content (like infographics) to help your messages stand out from the noise and clutter to more effectively reach your audience. It’s a system that’s worth adopting. Photos on Facebook get up to seven times more Likes (and ten times more Shares), images are the most retweeted links on Twitter and 81 comments are made by users on images posted on Instagram every second.
Did you know that 75.4 percent of brands now use social media for business purposes, and four out of ten have been doing so for more than two years? Platforms such as Twitter and Facebook have revolutionised marketing, sales and community engagement for the vast majority of brands, but what about within the workplace itself – are businesses practicing what they preach by letting employees use social media in the office?
Nothing has impacted the PR industry more than Twitter. Whereas the PR professional of five years ago might have mailed out a press kit and emailed a pitch, today’s PR pros are tweeting journalists and using services like Muck Rack to update their media lists with Twitter handles rather than email addresses. InkHouse Media + Marketing put together an interesting infographic that takes a look at PR then and now, as affected by Twitter and other modern technology.
Did you know that social media grew by 238 percent between 2009 and 2012, with more than half (54 percent) of U.S. adults active on one or more social media sites by the end of last year? Twitter usage has doubled in the past two years, and LinkedIn (60 percent increase) and Facebook (38 percent) have also made considerable gains over this period. Indeed, compared to traditional, and even other forms of digital media, social media has seen unprecedented growth, and is showing absolutely no signs of slowing down.
Hospitals and other healthcare professionals have long beenactive users of social media, and, in 2013, they’re more committed than ever. One survey has found that 90 percent of hospitals in the Ohio area of the U.S. are using social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook. And they’re investing in these channels, too. Almost half (49 percent) are devoting more staff and time to social media, and more than one-third (36 percent) are spending more money on these tools.
Twitter is the Facebook of the MySpace times and it seems Facebook knows it, as the platform everyone loves to complain about is supposedly planning a BIG Twitter-esque change. No, it’s not another timeline update (there’s on currently underway, in case you didn’t know) – Facebook is apparently planning to hijack Twitter’s hashtag! The next wave of social media madness has begun.
