We sure do love our infographics here at AllTwitter. And this one’s a prime specimen of just how entwined infographics are in social media: it explores how popular infographics are compared to other types of posts on Twitter, Facebook and other social networks.
Did you know that Twitter recently surpassed 500 million registered users? Yep. Half a billion. Impressive, right? That’s half as big as Facebook. Except… it isn’t. Around two-thirds of Twitter’s total user tally is made up of inactive accounts.
Two-thirds of online adults use one of the top three social networks – Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn – and, because your typical user is so prolific in the content they share and engage with on these platforms, we can easily learn an enormous amount about their personalities.
Did you know that 73 percent of small businesses are now using social media? Furthermore, four fifths (81 percent) of these plan to further increase their social marketing efforts, and 62 percent of SMBs not currently using these channels have said that they plan to do so in the next year. Facebook leads the way, with 82 percent of social small businesses utilising this platform, ahead of YouTube (73 percent), Twitter (47 percent) and LinkedIn (47 percent).
Did you know that a recent study of 1,229 U.S. hospitals revealed that 814 had Twitter accounts? That sounds pretty impressive, but it placed Twitter just third in the survey amongst the major social networks. Surprisingly, Foursquare (946 accounts) bagged the second spot, with Facebook (1068 Pages) comfortably leading the way.
Did you know that 36 percent of all links shared on Twitter are images, with two in five (40 percent) pointing at Twitter’sinternal photo sharer? This data comes courtesy of Diffbot, who analyzed 750,000 links posted to Twitter in order to answer three simple questions: what are we sharing, which sites are we using and what languages are being used?
Ten years is long time in anyone’s life, but it’s an eternity on the internet. Back in 2002, the internet had 569 million users – 9.1 percent of the global population – who spent, on average, just 46 minutes a day online. Today, that figure is up to 2.27 billion, – one in every third person worldwide – spending an average of four hours a day. And it’s easy to see why: websites in 2002, well, sucked. Relatively there was hardly any of them, and those we used were, looking back, pretty awful. Internet Explorer completely dominated the browser space, and the world of social networking basically came down to a single, innovative platform, Friendster. How much has changed in ten years?

The 2012 London Olympic Games has come and gone and, by all accounts, it was a great success. The Games saw record viewing figures across TV and the internet, and social media played a huge part in how we received information and updates, interacted with athletes and kept our sporting fingers very much on the pulse. Ahead of the Olympics Twitter had expressed its desire to be the“official narrator” of the Games, and it certainly delivered on that count, with 150 million tweets sent during the competition. But what was everybody tweeting about?
Way back in May 2011 – many, many moons ago in Twitter years – Lady Gaga became the first Twitter user to reach 10 million followers. Since then, she’s been joined by a number of other media luminaries, including such stalwarts as Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, Rihanna, Shakira, Barack Obama and Kim Kardashian. Since our last update, five new users have gained entry into Twitter’s 10 million club: Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Mars, Chris Brown, Jennifer Lopez and Pink, which brings this very exclusive membership to a total of twenty-four.
