Twitter Trends Will Now Be Tailored Just For You!

Twitter announced today that it is rolling out a new option for users – tailored trending topics.

Does this mean we will no longer see gems like SignsTheRelationshipIsOver and TellTheTruthTuesday? Those two aren’t actually half-bad considering what usually pops up . . .

Seriously though, this new offering could mean Twitter is growing up and leaving the spammy kid stuff behind.

Way back in 2009 we wrote about two easy ways to improve Twitter’s trending topics – one of the ways was to make the topics relevant, allowing participants to

view the top ten trending topics within my network, or any other chosen demographic (gender, age, location, etc), or even within a selected group of users. (It would also be nice to be able to filter out certain things.) And let me do this over the period of time (or number of tweets) that I choose. By making the trending topics relevant, I could pinpoint the subjects that matter, that I cared about, and react accordingly.

Well, what kind of voodoo did Shea do, because today Twitter is doing just that. Almost. (They still have a ways to go.) They’re improving their algorithms so that trends will be tailored based on your location and who you follow on Twitter. It’s a start.

This is the message the Twitter’s blog tells us you’ll see (in case you’re not seeing it yet – it’s just starting to roll out today):

But don’t worry, if you don’t want to see tailored trending topics and prefer that general, crazy list – just change your location and it will show you THAT instead. There’s a worldwide list and more than 150 locations to chose from.

Will you miss the old trending topics list or are you looking forward to having suggestions that make sense? I guess that question kind of answers itself for most people.
