6 Free Reading Apps for Your Kindle Fire HD

Amazon’s new Android tablet comes with a lot of apps which will help you buy stuff from Amazon, but it’s not so good at letting you get content elsewhere. They’ve even taken pains to make sure you cannot install competitor’s reading apps from the Amazon Appstore.

That’s why you have to find the apps elsewhere, which fortunately is not all that difficult. Here are a few reading apps which you can find as free downloads on various websites.

  1. OverDrive
  2. Aldiko
  3. Nook
  4. Kobo
  5. Google Books
  6. Bluefire Reader

Before you can install these apps you will first need to enable 3rd party app installations. Here’s how:

  1. Pull Down the Notification Bar from the upper edge of your Kindle Fire HD’s screen.
  2. Tap  the “More” button.
  3. Scroll down until you see “Device” option
  4. In the Device submenu, set “Allow installation of Applications” to ON, and tap OK when you see the warning prompt

These instructions are also good for installing other apps including games, file managers, media players, and more.
