Amazon To Introduce Kindle Lending Library In UK, Germany & France

Amazon is expanding its Kindle Owners’ Lending Library to the UK, Germany and France later this month. The service gives Kindle owners with a Prime membership the ability to borrow a book a month from participating publishers. The library includes more than 200,000 books and participants can borrow the eBooks with no due dates.

Many of the titles in the library come from independent authors and publishers using Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing platform. Authors who allow their books to be available for library lending are eligible to earn money from a special fund that pays them a royalty for books borrowed.

With the expansion of the library distribution, authors can now make their books available in the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library in the UK, Germany and France, in addition to the U.S. To encourage participation, Amazon is increasing the KDP Select fund, which pays royalties on borrowed books, from $600,000 to $700,000 in October. The number may go up in November.

According to a press release, “in September, KDP Select books that enrolled in August earned 77% more royalties from paid sales than the three months before they were enrolled in the program.”
