Eventually, as linear TV is viewed less, the spectrum it now uses on cable and fiber will be reallocated to expanding data transmission. Satellite TV subscribers will be fewer, and mostly be in places where high-speed Internet (cable or fiber) is not available. The importance of high-speed Internet will increase.

Tabby Awards Deadline Extended

TabTimes and the Application Developers Alliance revealed today that the Tabby Awards deadline has been extended until May 6th.

The contest will celebrate the top consumer apps in the world of tablets, exploring some of the best mobile content. The company has also launched Tablet Ecosystem, a new conference in September. Here’s more from the company:

500,000+ Magazines Created on Flipboard

News aggregation app Flipboard added the ability to create magazines in an update two weeks ago, and creators have now produced more than 500,000 magazines on the site.

LinkedIn Buys Pulse for $90 Million

LinkedIn has acquired the social reading company Pulse, making a move to become a “professional publishing platform.”

According to the release, they purchased the company for “approximately $90 million, subject to adjustment, in a combination of approximately 90 percent stock and approximately 10 percent cash.” Stanford graduate students Akshay Kothari and Ankit Gupta founded Pulse in 2010. Here’s more about Pulse from the release:

Pulse currently has more than 30 million users who have activated its iOS and Android-based news reader apps in more than 190 countries. Pulse is available in nine languages, and approximately 40% of users are outside the United States. More than 750 of the world’s leading publishers distribute their content through Pulse.

 

eBooks Composed Nearly 23% of Publishers’ Revenues in 2012

According to the Association of American Publishers (AAP) StatShot report for the calendar year of 2012, total trade sales rose six percent  in 2012 compared to the same period last year (AAP chart embedded above).

The AAP looked back at the digital transformation, reporting that digital books now make up 22.55 percent of net revenues in the trade publishing industry. GalleyCat has a breakdown of sales by format and category last year. Here’s more from the report:

In 2002, those Trade publishers reporting eBooks to AAP noted the format represented 0.05% of their total share of net revenue. By 2006, eBooks were reported as 0.50% of participating Trade publishers’ net revenue; it reached 1.18% by 2008. The following year, the digital transition was underway and percentages reported grew rapidly:  from 3.17% (2009) to 16.98% (2011) and now, for 2012, 22.55%.
