detoxIn a survey of 800 users, Frontrange discovered that 84% of us thinks that smartphone addiction exists while 45% of us suffers from a debilitating case of Smartphone overuse – at least once every hour! When asked if they could quit their phone for a week, 61% of respondents said they needed a phone at least once a week while 19% said they’d drop it if they were paid $500. Tough bargain!

The Importance of Optimizing Apps for iOS7, an Infographic

When comparing user feedback, those apps not optimized for iOS 7 tends to be significantly lower in rating for users on iOS7 than on previous iOS operating systems.

Just how significant are the differences? When comparing Whatsapp and Skype, both apps lost over 1 star when users mentioned iOS 7. Tablets Top Parents’ Gift Lists for Kids

PrintMobile devices are at the top of tech-buying parents’ wishlists for their kids this holiday season, according to a PBS Kids survey.

More than half of American parents (54 percent) plan to pick up a tech-related gift for their kids, the survey found, and a tablet was the most popular item with 28 percent of respondents saying they planned to purchase one. Tablet-buying parents combined with those purchasing a smartphone for their kids made up 36 percent, while video game consoles clocked in at 18 percent of expected purchases. Origins of Common UI Symbols, an Infographic

common UI symbolsSymbols are a major part of user interface design, but most of us would be hard pressed to know where they came from. We know that the play symbol means play and the power symbol turns things on and off.

Another common symbol is the @. Until 1885, the @ was on keyboards of accountants and used to designate at the rate of. In 1971, Raymon Tomlinson changed that meaning when he used it to separate the name of the user and their network address in the programming office of Berenek & Newman.

Smartphones and Computer Use Are Hurting Our Sleep

tech seepA recent study from the National Sleep Foundation found that 95% of those surveyed reported using electronic devices right before sleep – despite its unhealthy side affects.

According to Charles Czeisler, PhD, MD, Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, “Artificial light exposure between dusk and the time we go to bed at night suppresses release of the sleep-promoting hormone melatonin, enhances alertness and shifts circadian rhythms to a later hour—making it more difficult to fall asleep.” Read more

Selfie is the Oxford Dictionary Word of the Year, Here Are Tips on How to Take One

According to Judy Pearsall, Editorial Director for Oxford Dictionaries, “Using the Oxford Dictionaries language research programme, which collects around 150 million words of current English in use each month, we can see a phenomenal upward trend in the use of selfie in 2013, and this helped to cement its selection as Word of the Year.”
