Developers Revive Atari’s Paperboy as 3D Fitness Experience Using Oculus Rift and Stationary Bike
In a truly progressive shift, the developers at Globacore combined the Oculus Rift with Atari’s Paperboy and Kickr’s stationary bike fitness regimen into a fun and experimental exercise routine. When Atari created Paperboy in the 80′s, they didn’t have access to Oculus Rift or Kickr’s fitness app or we would all be world class cyclists by now since newspaper delivery jobs are pretty obsolete.
The game also got a boost from 3D rendering software, which have also evolved drastically in the last 3 decades:
The game is built in Unity with 3D assets created in 3D studio and textured in Photoshop. The KickR sensor detects the speed of the bike and has the ability to provide programmatically controlled resistance. The KickR communicates speed and cadence through Bluetooth to a nearby iPad which updates our app over OSC.
The Oculus Rift VR headset lets you look around your scene in a full 360 degrees and allows you to focus your paper aim. The Kinect controller tracks the positions of your hands and arms, and detects the paper throwing gesture.
The game is still in development so you can’t buy it yet. Just visit the project site and sign-up to get updates if you want a piece of the action.
