U.S. News Scaling Down Office Space

According to an office email, U.S. News and World Report is subleasing a whopping 5000 square feet of their 4th floor office to Communications Development, Inc.

The space will be under construction until Jan 31, 2010 when the new roomies move in.

David Gregory Has "Arrived"

The next time you catch the Acela up to New York, check out NBC's David Gregory on the cover of Arrive. The "Meet the Press" anchor gets a six-page spread in the mag.

First Lady of Glamour

First Lady Michelle Obama graces the December cover of Glamour magazine, the "Women of the Year" issue. This interview is also the debut of CBS' Katie Couric as a Glamour columnist. The First Lady is just one of five "Women of the Year," each with their own cover, and they'll all be honored at Carnegie Hall in Novemeber.

The mag hits newsstands next week, but you can get a preview here.

Washington Monthly Turns 40!

wash monthly.jpg This month, Washington Monthly toasts to forty years since they published their first issue. To celebrate, the mag is releasing a special anniversary issue, "The Best of Washington Monthly." Happy birthday!

Graff's New Gig at Washingtonian

ggraff.jpg In an interesting role reversal, WaPo's Howard Kurtz talks with former FishbowlDC editor Garrett Graff about his new gig as editor of Washingtonian Magazine.

Graff, whose first assignment as a freelancer for Washingtonian was to profile Kurtz, addresses the magazine's lack of cutting-edge reporting, whether a self-described liberal can be a fair and balanced editor and if an under-30 editor has something to prove...

"I have traditionally done pretty well proving to people I'm capable of that which I've been given, or earned, depending on how one looks at it," Graff tells Kurtz.

Check out the article on Wapo.com and PRNewser's post on Graff's move from PR to editorial.

BusinessWeek Winning Bidder TBD This Week

According to BusinessWeek, the winning bidder in the sale of their publication will be named this week.

This summer, McGraw-Hill officially announced its desire to entertain offers after Bloomberg reported their intention to sell earlier that day. Among the remaining bidders are a few groups that were also named in initial reports of CQ suitors earlier this year - Bloomberg LP, Thomson Reuters and investment firm ZelnickMedia.

BW's Tom Lowry claims that Bloomberg is the front-runner and that McGraw-Hill's intention is to have the deal closed by year-end. Check out his article for more details.

Michelle on Prevention

Diane Graces Cap File's Fall Issue

It's ABC's Diane Sawyer who graces the cover of the latest Capitol File, but the mag's real "it" girl is new Editor-in-Chief Sarah Schaffer. FBDC caught up with Schaffer for the scoop on the fall issue, which should hit newsstands October 1st...

Diane Sawyer's on the cover- what timing! Was she picked before her big announcement as the new "World News" anchor? And why?

We're thrilled to have Diane Sawyer on the cover, and at such an important time in her career as she prepares to take over the helm at "World News." We chose her for our fall issue because we admire her body of work, warm spirit and long career in journalism. We've had this cover planned for a long while now, but as it turns out the timing worked perfectly for her- and for us! In our interview she talks about her journo mentors and favorite stories, as well as her early days working in the Nixon White House. It's a good read.

What new features can we will see in this issue and can we expect to see in future issues?

Where do I begin? We've made some design tweaks and pumped up our coverage of the District's food and fashion scenes. We're also introducing a new special section called Obsessions. It's an annual guide to what we're, as the name suggests, obsessed with right now in Greater Washington. And more than ever before we're taking a peek inside the lives of the people who define Washington's culture-politicians, power players, media types, artists, philanthropists and local business leaders- with features like our On the Record piece, a first-person essay (this month's is by Mark Shriver; he talks about his family's legacy) and our Life of the Party page, which polls two politicos- one from the left and one from the right- on their hobbies, passions, annoyances and favorite DCisms.

Sawyer has a three-page spread, in which she discusses what has changed in journalism over the course of her career, her favorite and most harrowing interviews and even dabbles into her personal life.

You'll also recognize a certain contributor's name this issue of Cap File. Matt catches up with a few DC media types, including Luke Russert, George Stephanopoulos, Ed Henry, Amy Holmes and Dana Priest this fall about their favorite local haunts.

FishbowlDC Exclusive: Meet the New WaPo Mag

wapomagmatt-f.jpg

Inclusive. That's the word I'd select to summarize the Washington Post Magazine's recent redesign. The new Sunday supplement doesn't drop until this weekend but FishbowlDC got our hands on the first copy of the revamped rag to leave the newsroom. Here's my take...

Editor Debra Leithauser, Art Director Janet Michaud and GM Jenny Abramson hit a home run. Flipping through the fresh but familiar pages of the new WaPo Mag is kind of like sitting down with an old friend for cocktails -- only, your friend got really hot since the last time you saw them. The features are fast but fulfilling reads. The tone is personal, not preachy. And the design is sexy yet sensible. The outcome? A truly solid product for Columbia Heights hipsters, McLean mommies and everyone in between.

wapo mag going out.jpg

Besides the apparent artistic, graphical and brand changes, new features include:

Whatever Happened To: Kind of a "where are they now" update on previously featured Wapo stories that left readers wondering "what ever happened to..".

Our Town: Insightful illustrations from two Post artists who recount on-the-scene experiences from a variety of destinations in the D.C. Metro area.

Unspun: a more personal than policy interview with a politician.

The Breakdown: photos, graphics, fun facts and quirky details about the parts that make up an object (from monster trucks to walk-in closets).

Trend Report: a weekly take on "real world" fashion and beauty that features local boutiques, services and reader-applicable advice.

Behind the Lens: the story behind a unique or powerful photograph from the Washington Post.
wapo mag table.jpg
But fear not, die hard Date Lab readers. Date Lab, First Person Singular, restaurant reviews from food critic Tom Sietsema, Gene Weingarten's "Below the Beltway," Second Glance, Crossword puzzles and the insightful long-form pieces are still alive and well in the new WP Mag.

Want to check in with Michelle Rhee, check out the creative coalition at Gold Leaf Studio or get some guidance to cure your weekend woes before the mag hits newsstands? You can either borrow mine or pick one up this Friday when WaPo will hand out 20,000 standalone copies at a variety of locations (including metro stops) around the city to celebrate the magazine's revamp.

What's On Reggie Love's (and Therefore the President's) Reading List?

The New Republic. And the mag's pretty happy about it.

This is President Obama's personal aide Reggie Love last week, walking across the South Lawn to Marine One for a trip to Minneapolis with the President.
