Karen Travers: The FishbowlDC Interview

traverstavves.JPGSay hello to ABC News' White House Producer Karen Travers.

How many suits do you own? 7-8? I'm not even sure, I try to avoid wearing them.

What word do you routinely misspell? Maybe. I think I missed a day in second grade when we learned to spell that word and it always trips me up.

Did you see Brokeback Mountain? no - I'm not a big movie person

Did you see The Da Vinci Code? no but i did read the book.

What's the name of your cell phone ring? "1 -beep"

What time did you get up this morning? 5am ET to get to Andrews AFB and fly to Birmingham AL

When did you last cry and why? I teared up a bit at my younger brother's high school graduation in June. He is 10 years younger than me and it was strange to see him all grown up and giving the valedictory speech.

Which of the seven deadly sins are you? well I am on a White House trip today, so I would have to say gluttony. It's 11:20am and I think they are serving the third meal of the day already.

Beach, city or country? beach! I spend every weekend I can at the family house in Stone Harbor NJ, making that 4 hour drive just to get a few hours on the beach.

Would you say you're cute? Pretty? Hot? Beautiful? I would say I am blushing at the question

What color is your bathroom? White with blue tiles

How many emails do you receive a day, roughly? maybe 500-600

What's your opinion of New York City? Great place to visit because my sister Katie lives there and there is always something fun to do

What's your favorite letter? M

What single person played the biggest role / had the biggest influence on your journalism career? Leroy Sievers -- he was the executive producer at Nightline and my first boss. He passed on so many invaluable lessons on journalism, professionalism and life and he probably does not even realize it. He made even the youngest, greenest staffers feel like they not only could contribute to the show, but they should. He approached decisions with experience and reason and was willing to sit down and explain those decisions. He was always candid with career advice and guidance. Leroy was willing to take a chance on me with my first big job at Nightline and I would not be where I am today without that experience.

Have you ever downloaded a podcast? If so, which one? no - I am not very tech savvy with my iPod.

Who's your all-time favorite American Idol candidate? Kelly Clarkson - she has set the standard for a successful post-Idol career. She’s also the winner of the only season I watched.

When's the last time you volunteered? Where? Probably before I started this job covering the White House, with a service project through Disney

Who is your favorite active journalist? ABC's Martha Raddatz (sure, I'm biased). Martha breaks stories on her days off, works tirelessly and is a great example to me of how to work hard and find success.

What did you have for breakfast? Zone bar – Fudge Graham

What's your favorite item of clothing? Donovan McNabb jersey (green, #5) - a staple of the Sunday fall wardrobe for anyone from Philadelphia

What one toiletry item could you not live without? Chi ceramic flat iron (I should get royalties for how many people I have recommended it to)

If you could have one superpower, which one would it be? Ability to travel through time

Better role model: GIJoe? Barbie? Barbie has kept her good looks over the decades and only wears heels, She ditched her boyfriend Ken for two years, only to bring him back after he has a makeover because she realized it was good PR. Talk about a shrewd operator!

Each FishbowlDC Interview subject is asked to contribute a word to this ongoing thread. Thus far we have..."Leprechaun suits shimmer Sensenbrennerly. Never regurgitate, orginate! Ideally, chutzpah feathers one's soul melodically. Rhythmically, supergalifragilistic sounds baroque indeed nefarious but Springsteen..." defenestrates...
