David von Drehle: The FishbowlDC Interview

dvdimage.jpgFor today's FishbowlDC Interview, we chat with The Washington Post's new Style section political reporter, David von Drehle.

How many suits do you own? Six

What word do you routinely misspell? Affect. Or maybe Effect.

Did you see Brokeback Mountain? Nope

Did you see The Da Vinci Code? Nope.

What's the name of your cell phone ring? Um ? ?ring??

What time did you get up this morning? 6 a.m.

When did you last cry and why? On top of a mountain while spreading my mother-in-law's ashes.

Read the rest when you click below...(and see previous FishbowlDC interviews: Julie Mason, David Shuster, Joe Curl, Alex Pareene, Peter Beinart, Jonah Goldberg, Megyn Kendall, Ana Marie Cox, Jim Brady, Howard Mortman, Amy Argetsinger, Jose Antonio Vargas, Chuck Todd, Tom Gottlieb, Kelly Ann Collins)

Which of the seven deadly sins are you? With four small kids my occasions for sin are limited. Envy, however, is the one that scares me most.

Beach, city or country? Happy memories, all.

Would you say you're cute? Pretty? Hot? Beautiful? Once upon a time, perhaps ?

What color is your bathroom? Grayish-orangeish-moldish. It was built before the concept of "color" had been perfected in the area of bathroom decor. Fortunately, I expect a windfall soon from a transaction with the former first lady of Nigeria, and we will have the bathrooms redone.

How many emails do you receive a day, roughly? Receive: 200. Read: 4.

What's your opinion of New York City? Love it.

What's your favorite letter? Purloined.

What single person played the biggest role / had the biggest influence on your journalism career? Can't narrow it to one. Starts with Pete Mindock, my high school journalism teacher who got me a job working nights at The Denver Post. Continues through a cast of thousands. With new names added regularly.

Have you ever downloaded a podcast? If so, which one? I'm with you here except for the part about "downloaded" and "podcast".

Who's your all-time favorite American Idol candidate? Abraham Lincoln.

When's the last time you volunteered? Where? Saturday at my kids' school. Picking up litter, which is my speciality.

Who is your favorite active journalist? Can't narrow it to one. Different gods for different days. The one I wish I were reading each morning is Marjorie Williams, the first giant of my generation to fall.

What did you have for breakfast? Ugh. A bowl of fibrous bran shreds that somehow drifted into the house and won't leave. I am too cheap to throw them out. Soaked in milk, with sugar and bananas, they taste exactly like wet, sugary cardboard with bananas. Why do you ask? Do you want some? Really ? take the whole box!

What's your favorite item of clothing? How long does this interview go on?

What one toiletry item could you not live without? (glancing irritably at watch)

If you could have one superpower, which one would it be? Genius.

Better role model: GIJoe? Barbie? Joe. Admittedly overdoing it in the gym, and seemingly implicated in the steroid scandals, but at least he is serving his country.

Each FishbowlDC Interview subject is asked to contribute a word to this ongoing thread. Thus far we have..."Leprechaun suits shimmer Sensenbrennerly. Never regurgitate, orginate! Ideally, chutzpah feathers one's soul melodically. Rhythmically, supergalifragilistic..." sounds...
