"I do think that the quality which makes a man want to write and be read is essentially a desire for self-exposure and is masochistic. Like one of those guys who has a compulsion to take his thing out and show it on the street." - James Jones

Hugo Gurdon: The FishbowlDC Interview

hugocap.jpg Say hello to The Hill newspaper's Editor-in-Chief Hugo Gurdon.

How many suits do you own? Eight -- six still wearable

What word do you routinely misspell? hotle for hotel -- a persistent typo rather than a spelling mistake.

Did you see Brokeback Mountain? nope

Did you see The Da Vinci Code? no

What's the name of your cell phone ring? verizon tone

What time did you get up this morning? 5.55am for boot camp

When did you last cry and why? Ridiculously, it was when my eldest daughter said "Uzbekistan" about six months ago; it was the correct answer to a question in the DC Geography Bee that put her through to the final round. The pride spilled over; it often does .

Which of the seven deadly sins are you? Sloth, in its original sense. I don't mean laziness; I work 11-12 hours a day.

Read the rest when you click below...(and see previous FishbowlDC interviews: Julie Mason, David Shuster, Joe Curl, Alex Pareene, Peter Beinart, Jonah Goldberg, Megyn Kendall, Ana Marie Cox, Jim Brady, Howard Mortman, Amy Argetsinger, Jose Antonio Vargas, Chuck Todd, Tom Gottlieb, Kelly Ann Collins, David von Drehle, David Lat, Mark Leibovich, Zain Verjee, David Plotz, Paul Kane, Karen Travers, Mark Halperin)

Beach, city or country? New England beaches, old England country

Would you say you're cute? Pretty? Hot? Beautiful? At dusk, from a distance, many years ago, in the land of the blind.

What color is your bathroom? Yellow

How many emails do you receive a day, roughly? 100

What's your opinion of New York City? I spent three years there (1987-90) when crime and crack were reaching
their peak. Loved it. For three months i lived at the Algonquin Hotel
(slowest elevators in the world). I go back three or four times a year; still like it but feel like an alien.

What's your favorite letter? zzzzzzzzz

What single person played the biggest role / had the biggest
influence on your journalism career?
Charles Moore, former editor of The Daily Telegraph, biographer of Margaret Thatcher. A wonderfully witty and wise editor, a humane and urbane man. He appointed me Washington bureau chief in 1997.

Have you ever downloaded a podcast? If so, which one? No

Who's your all-time favorite American Idol candidate? Nails on a chalkboard -- can't stand any of them.

When's the last time you volunteered? Where? Helped run a cub scout den for the past two years at Bolling Air Force Base. It was my unlikely pitch for sainthood.

Who is your favorite active journalist? Mark Steyn

Each FishbowlDC Interview subject is asked to contribute a word to this ongoing thread. Thus far we have..."Leprechaun suits shimmer Sensenbrennerly. Never regurgitate, orginate! Ideally, chutzpah feathers one's soul melodically. Rhythmically, supergalifragilistic sounds baroque indeed nefarious but Springsteen defenestrates only..." stumblebums
