"I do think that the quality which makes a man want to write and be read is essentially a desire for self-exposure and is masochistic. Like one of those guys who has a compulsion to take his thing out and show it on the street." - James Jones

Tom Gottlieb: The FishbowlDC Interview

gottlieb234.jpgToday we sit down with Roll Call's Tom Gottlieb, who is known to many for his big Daily Show appearance.

How many suits do you own? Only one. I feel like that's a sin here in D.C.

What word do you routinely misspell? Perseverance. Am I the only one who thinks there should be another r, between the second e and the v?

Did you see Brokeback Mountain? Nope

Did you see The Da Vinci Code? Negative. But I did see Snakes on a Plane. And it was everything I hoped it would be.

What's the name of your cell phone ring? "Notify." But I usually have it set to vibrate.

What time did you get up this morning? 8 a.m. But the question you really want to ask is when I actually got out of bed. Because that wasn’t until about 40 minutes later (not a morning person at all).

When did you last cry and why? It's been a while, but I almost cried when I saw the Nike Father's Day commercial with clips of Tiger Woods and his dad, set to The Zombies' "This Will Be Our Year." I love that song and the album it's on.

Which of the seven deadly sins are you? I mix it up among all seven, but pride, greed and envy are usually in heavy rotation.

Beach, city or country? City. Hands down.

Would you say you're cute? Pretty? Hot? Beautiful? I can pull off all of them

What color is your bathroom? I'm partially color blind, so I honestly have no idea. It could be off-white, but it might be one of those light shades of yellow. Saffron, perhaps?

How many emails do you receive a day, roughly? Probably between 40 and 50

What's your opinion of New York City? Greatest place in the world. I'm biased, though.

What's your favorite letter? W (only letter with another letter in it's name ... I find that fact amusing)

What single person played the biggest role / had the biggest influence on your journalism career? Bruce Reynolds ... not the infamous train robber, but one of my professors at Rutgers. Taught me how to tighten up my writing.

Have you ever downloaded a podcast? If so, which one? Nope

Who's your all-time favorite American Idol candidate? I pass on American Idol, but if I had to pick one ... Anwar Robinson, whom I only know about because he's a fellow Jerseyan who teaches middle school in my friend's hometown.

When's the last time you volunteered? Where? Back in high school, I think. Don't know where.

Who is your favorite active journalist? Peter Gammons

What did you have for breakfast? I haven't had breakfast regularly since I started college ... I value sleep more.

What's your favorite item of clothing? Mock-turtle sweaters

What one toiletry item could you not live without? Hair product

If you could have one superpower, which one would it be? The ability to read minds. That would be a fantastic advantage to have as a journalist.

Better role model: GIJoe? Barbie? GIJoe. He had those corny morals at the end of every episode.

Each FishbowlDC Interview subject is asked to contribute a word to this ongoing thread. Thus far we have..."Leprechaun suits shimmer Sensenbrennerly. Never regurgitate, orginate! Ideally, chutzpah feathers one's soul..." melodically
