"I do think that the quality which makes a man want to write and be read is essentially a desire for self-exposure and is masochistic. Like one of those guys who has a compulsion to take his thing out and show it on the street." - James Jones

Jim Brady: The FishbowlDC Interview

brady2814.jpgFor this week's FishbowlDC Interview, we sit down with washingtonpost.com Executive Editor Jim Brady:

How many suits do you own? 5.5. I left a jacket somewhere in the past six months, and it never did turn up.

What word do you routinely misspell? Separate. It cost me the title in my sixth-grade spelling bee, and I still have a mental block.

Did you see Brokeback Mountain? No.

Did you see The Da Vinci Code? No. But before you conclude I don't like movies, it's completely the opposite. I have 200 hours of old movies sitting on my TiVo box every day, so I don't often feel the need to drop $30 at the theater.

What's the name of your cell phone ring? "The Ring the Phone Came With"

What time did you get up this morning? 7am

When did you last cry and why? I'm not much of a crier, but I definitely teared up when I watched the highlights of the autistic high school basketball player in upstate New York who scored 20 points in four minutes. At a time where there's a lot wrong with sports, that showed everything that can still be right about it.

Which of the seven deadly sins are you? Gluttony, especially since they put a Five Guys Burgers & Fries near our office in Arlington.

Beach, city or country? City. By a country mile.

Would you say you're cute? Pretty? Hot? Beautiful? Not quite hideous.

What color is your bathroom? I have no idea.

How many emails do you receive a day, roughly? 300

What's your opinion of New York City? Love it. I grew up on Long Island.

What's your favorite letter? W. I'm a bit competitive when playing sports, and nothing's better than a "W."

What single person played the biggest role / had the biggest influence on your journalism career? In a odd way, I guess Richard Nixon. If not for his paranoia, there's no Watergate and thus no movie called "All the President's Men." I fell in love with that movie, and after seeing it, knew I wanted to get into journalism. I was the only nine-year-old kid in America who found "Star Wars" deathly boring and "All the President's Men" exhilarating.

Have you ever downloaded a podcast? If so, which one? Many. Obviously, I've downloaded washingtonpost.com's audio and video podcasts, and also Slate's daily podcast and The Onion Radio News, plus a variety of others.

Who's your all-time favorite American Idol candidate? I have never watched "American Idol." I don't watch anything that's universally considered "reality TV." My relaity TV is watching football on Sundays. And as a New York Jets fan, I can say, reality bites.

When's the last time you volunteered? Where? I helped paint a youth center in Ashburn when I was working at AOL, probably in 2003. It's been too long.

Who is your favorite active journalist? Oh, I'd just as soon skip that one. Nothing good can come from naming just one. :-)

What did you have for breakfast? I didn't eat breakfast. I rarely do.

What's your favorite item of clothing? Jeans.

What one toiletry item could you not live without? Hair gel. I seem to go from well-groomed to Harpo Marx in about two days, so need to have some way to control the 'do.

If you could have one superpower, which one would it be? Freeze time, so I could finally get caught up on all the books lining my bookshelves.

Better role model: GIJoe? Barbie? GI Joe.

Each FishbowlDC Interview subject is asked to contribute a word to this ongoing thread. Thus far we have..."Leprechaun suits shimmer Sensenbrennerly. Never regurgitate, orginate! Ideally", chutzpah...
