Allbritton V. Graham V. Bradley

The war is on.

One month after WaPo won the bidding war for Politico’s Nia Malika Henderson, Robert Allbritton has struck back in a way that is allegedly rattling the top brass at 15th and L. FishbowlDC has learned that Paul Volpe, the man who built the new WaPo political site, has been hired away by TBD, Allbritton’s new metro site.

Volpe will be a top editor-innovator for the site. WaPo officials huddled with Volpe several times, pleading with him to stay, according to a source familiar with the WaPo meetings. He joins TBD armed with WaPO’s plan for taking on rival Politico – invaluable information in what is fast-becoming a bitter showdown between the city’s most powerful and rich. David Bradley, who told the NY Observer this week that he wants to take on Politico, wants to be in the battle, but rivals don’t necessarily perceive NJ to be a serious threat.

What’s more, FishbowlDC hears Bradley recently made a run at WaPo’s Chris Cillizza but was turned down. He is aggressively courting other star reporters to run a revamped NJ but having questionable luck.

Bradley did not provide a comment by FishbowlDC press time. Should he respond we will be sure to keep you updated.
