Helen Fire and Brimstone: Who Will Forgive Her?

ht.jpg News of Hearst White House reporter Helen Thomas‘s views on Gaza surfaced in cyberspace Friday in video interview originally posted on In it, the 89-year-old Thomas said Jews should “get the hell out of Palestine.” She has since apologized. Over the weekend, reaction languished and the story did not pop up on any of the Sunday talk shows.

This morning, everyone’s talking.
“Maybe its good to give her a cake and retire her from the front row,” said MSNBC “Morning Joe” Host Joe Scarborough after the network aired the controversial Thomas video.

In addition, C-SPAN’s “Washington Journal” ran the video and discussed Thomas’s potential demise, asking viewers to phone in and give their opinions. Specifically, the host asked: “Should Helen Thomas resign?” The answer was mixed: “No, she shouldn’t resign,” one male caller said. “She told the truth.” A female caller said, “Helen Thomas, yeah, she has a right to her opinion, but that is like a Nazi-like mentality. It’s not right at all.” Another female caller said: “I don’t think she should be pushed out. Everyone has a right to freedom of speech. She should be made aware that her comments are reprehensible.”

By Sunday afternoon, the story had begun to escalate. ABC, CNN and Mediaite all ran stories on Thomas.
Reported by HuffPost‘s Sam Stein, Thomas’s speaker’s bureau dropped her. Also Sunday: CQ’s Craig Crawford declared he will no longer write books with her. Read his statement here.
