Politico reports, “Franken helps craft McCain ‘SNL’ skit”. From The Writer’s Almanac on Sunday: “It was on this day in 1970 that the first modern op-ed page appeared in The New York Times. People sometimes think that ‘op-ed’ stands for ‘opinion-editorial,’ but it actually stands for ‘opposite the editorial page.’ Op-eds began in the 1920s, but they were forums for newspapers’ columnists, not for outside writers. The modern op-ed was created by New York Times journalist John Bertram Oakes. Oakes received a commentary letter that he thought was excellent, but it was too long to print as a letter to the editor, and it couldn’t be published in the op-ed page since it wasn’t by a columnist. So he got the idea for an op-ed page that would include outside opinions. Oakes spent 10 years trying to convince publishers that is was good idea. Finally the Times editors agreed, and published the first version, and it’s become the model for op-ed pages worldwide.” Did YOU make Reid Wilson‘s crab fest this weekend?   • A release announced, “According to Nielsen Media Research for the week of September 8, 2008, ABC News’ ‘Nightline’ outperformed CBS’ ‘Letterman’ among Total Viewers and Adults 25-54 for the third straight week. This marks ‘Nightline’s’ nineteenth victory (plus one tie) over ‘Letterman’ among the key A25-54 demographic this season and the fourteenth victory (plus two ties) over CBS among Total Viewers.”

  • An ABC release announced, “According to Nielsen Media Research for Sunday, September 14, 2008, ABC News’ ‘This Week with George Stephanopoulos’ posted 3.60 million, the program’s highest total viewer delivery in over six years (since February 3, 2002). This marks George Stephanopoulos’ highest total delivery since he began anchoring the program. In addition, ‘This Week’ posted its highest A25-54 demo delivery in over 5 years (since March 30, 2003). This also marks the sixth week in a row ‘This Week’ grew in total viewers.”
