Still, the DC-based correspondent did a live election stand-up from Arlington, VA then hopped in a car and zoomed back to the bureau where she manned the newsroom chair for more than seven hours.” Gridskipper presents “The Best of DC’s Worst Irish Pubs”. Check out today’s White House Photo of the Day from Time. Today’s “Angry Journalist” rant of the day: “I’m pissed because 28 people lost their jobs today, and the powers that be don’t even have the stones or consideration to e-mail or call people to let them know it’s coming. They posted a piece of paper on an obscure bulletin board, called people into ‘meetings’ and sent them packing. This place is slowly eating my soul.”

  • Seems journalists were not the only ones in the WaPo newsroom on Election Night. A release announced, “Tony Reid ’75, the new director of the Writing Center at The Hill School and a longtime editor at The Washington Post, is returning to the paper on Election Night and taking three students with him. Hana Smith-Ide (Pottstown, Pa.); Jennifer Thompson, Wykoff, N.J.); and Mary-Grace Reeder (Laurel, Miss.), all sixth formers and members of Reid’s Writing Fellows program, will accompany Reid. Reid anticipates officially opening the Writing Center in its refurbished space in the coming months.”

  • A release announced, “ABC News was the most-watched broadcast network on election night placing first among Total Viewers, Adults 25-54 and Adults 18-49. Anchored by Charles Gibson, Diane Sawyer and George Stephanopoulos, ‘Vote 2008′ averaged 13.14 million Total Viewers, a 4.9 among Adults 25-54 and a 4.4. among Adults 18-49 during primetime (8:00-11:00pm).”

  • A release announced, “At the culmination of one of the most exciting presidential races of all time, more than 18.741 million Americans turned to the networks of NBC to witness history being made as Senator Barack Obama became the first African American ever to be elected president of the United States. With Brian Williams anchoring coverage on NBC News along with Tom Brokaw and Andrea Mitchell, the network drew more than 12.439 viewers, according to Nielsen Fast Nationals 8-11:30 pm.”

  • An ABC release announced, “In the final full week of the presidential race, more viewers in the key adult demographic turned to ABC’s ‘World News with Charles Gibson’ than any other evening newscast. For the week of October 27th, the ABC broadcast ranked #1 among Adults 25-54, outperforming NBC’s ‘Nightly News’ 2.2/8 to 2.1/8. Among Total Viewers, ‘World News’ averaged 8.34 million, placing second by just 20,000. This marks ABC’s best Total Viewer and demo performances in nearly two months (week of 9/8/2008).”

  • A release announced, “According to Nielsen Media Research data, ‘NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams’ was the most-watched network evening newscast, winning the week of October 27 — November 2. During the week, the Williams-led newscast averaged 8.363 million total viewers, +20K more than ABC ‘World News” 8.343 million, and a whopping +2.357 million more than CBS ‘Evening News” 6.006 million. Season-to-date, ‘Nightly’ leads ABC by +111K in total viewers, and by +39K in A25-54. In homes, the broadcast tied with ABC with a 5.6/11, beating CBS’ 4.1/8.”

  • The AP reports, “More than 65 million people watched Election Night returns Tuesday on the main broadcast and cable news networks. Preliminary Nielsen Media Research estimates show that ABC News, with Charles Gibson leading a team that broadcast from New York’s Times Square, won bragging rights with 13.1 million prime-time viewers.”

  • Philadelphia Daily News’ Ellen Gray writes, “Television, the medium that first divided us into a nation of red and blue states, last night pulled out every crayon in its box to show that map remade. … But for sheer drama, no news division’s bells or whistles could compete with the news itself, delivered in the final moments of prime time with none of the ambiguity that marked two previous presidential elections.”

  • Media Memo reports, “Time Inc. still hasn’t informed its staff about who is staying and who is going in the upcoming mass firings at Time Warner’s magazine unit. But it has released a bit more detail to Wall Street: It will record between $100 million and $125 million in restructuring charges ‘related principally’ to the sackings this quarter.”

  • Looking to Fox News, The New Republic asks, “What will the opposition media look like during an Obama administration?”

  • TVNewser reports, “CNN was the top rated cable channel during Election Night in prime time, even topping broadcast networks NBC, CBS and FOX in Total Viewers. In the A25-54 demo, CNN was the top rated cable network as well. This was CNN’s highest-ever viewership in prime time.”

  • Based on internal data via Omniture Site Catalyst, CNN announced, “With 30 million unique visitors, CNN.com attracted the largest daily audience in its history, more than doubling the previous record of 13.4 million generated on Super Tuesday of this year. CNN.com generated a remarkable 282.5 million page views, also marking the highest day in the site’s history and more than doubling its previous record of 103.2 million page views from Super Tuesday of this year. On Election Day, CNN.com’s traffic peaked during the 9pm ET hour with 35.6 million page views.”
