Savannah Says Being Bad is How You Get to be Good

MSNBC’s Savannah Guthrie was in Tuscon over the weekend to deliver the commencement address at the University of Arizona, her alma mater. While she was there, the Mountain Oyster Club School of Journalism chatted with Guthrie about leaving her job covering Washington politics to host the third hour of the “Today Show.” She admitted, “It’s hard to leave Washington. I love covering the White House. I love covering politics. But I’m excited for this new adventure.”

Guthrie looked out at the sea of students and said, “You look so good in your cap and gown I think I’m just going to take a picture real quick.”

She continued, “I really believe this. Making mistakes and being bad at something — this is how you get to be any good at all. I know this is hard to hear, but it’s true. You’re not always ready for every big job and every opportunity. But here’s the truth and here is why you deserve to be excited. You will be ready, you will get there. You’ve got your degree now and you are on your way.”

MSNBC’s Willie Geist, who was filling in for Chuck Todd and Guthrie on “The Daily Rundown,” said word within the building was that Guthrie blew the commencement address out of the park.
