FBDC Tweeterboard: Local Broadcast News

Earlier this month we took a look at the social standing of the DC publications and Washington-based national anchors. Now it’s time to turn our attention to local broadcasters. FishbowlDC tallied the Twitter followers of DC’s TV and radio stations, as well as those of the top on-air talent. Here’s what we found:

NBC4′s Angie Goff and WJLA’s Alison Starling’s Youngest Celebrated at Sip & See

WJLA’s Rebecca Cooper, NBC4′s Angie Goff and Bob, NBC News’ Peter Alexander and Ava Starling, Alison Starling, Jill Collins

WJLA’s Rebecca Cooper and PR maven Jill Collins hosted a “Sip & See” at Carmine’s this past Saturday for WJLA anchor Alison Starling‘s newest baby, Ava Starling, and NBC4 anchor Angie Goff‘s baby, Robert (Bob) Ellis IV.

Guests included 30 TV women, anchors, and producers from all the local affiliates, plus Peter Alexander, NBC News White House Correspondent (and spouse of Alison Starling).

My first reaction upon being invited was “What on earth is a Sip & See?” Well, apparently, it’s a popular Southern tradition to introduce a little one to friends and colleagues while you sip on champagne. Given how much baby coverage I’ve been doing of late, if it weren’t hosted at Carmine’s, I’d likely have politely declined. But the promise of their famous meatballs -and the champagne of course – was too much to resist.

Here’s how it went down.

10:30am - Snoozughhhh, I have to go to that Sip & See! Seriously, how can I get out of this? Alas, as chief parenting reporter for FishbowlDC, I have duties.

1pm - Walk into Carmine’s, the legendary family style Italian resto hailing from New York, one hour late. #yolo

Angie Goff and Adora, Bloomberg TV’s Megan Hemmerlein

1:02 - Ohh wait…this was like a dressy affair, and I’m wearing flannel. #yolo

1:03 - Realization that other kids are here too. Should that have been expected? Again, anxiety setting in over the thought of having children. Where’s the champagne?

1:05 - Say hello to Angie Goff and meet Bob. Immediately ask where Bob’s sister Adora is. For those who don’t know, Adora is the star of #AdorasDay on Angie’s Instagram (@OhMyGoff), and in my eyes, a celebrity.

1:08 - Bump into Alison Starling. Awkwardly introduce myself as we’ve never met and I’m at her child’s Sip & See. Make sure she knows that I know Angie and not a younger version of Tareq Salahi.

1:11 - Objective for attending…Carmine’s meatballs. Seriously, the bomb. Contemplating asking for a to-go box. Is that rude?

1:13 - Formality begins. Alison’s husband, Peter Alexander, put on the spot and asked about the possibility of missing Ava’s birth because of having to cover President Obama’s historic Africa trip. He replies, “The consequences of not going on this historic trip with Alison were far greater.” Funny.

Sorry, Prince Harry, Savannah’s Off the Market

NBC “TODAY” Show host Savannah Guthrie was all smiles this morning as she revealed her engagement to political consultant Mike Feldman, setting off a flurry of reaction in Washington and beyond.

Guthrie flashed her diamond ring on air. Weatherman Al Roker tweeted that actor Bradley Cooper brought Savannah flowers for the occasion. NBC “MTP” Executive Producer Betsy Fischer remarked, “Two great people — Savannah and Mike — awesome news!” CNN’s Jessica Yellin added, “Wowza. Check out that pic! Congrats guys!” And Co-host Willie Geist assumes his invitation is in the mail: “Two of the greats. You’ll make a beautiful bride.” And Mediaite founder and ABC Legal Analyst Dan Abrams added his congratulatory note, saying, “Two people I’ve really liked and respected for a long time.”

Savannah had a pointed message for Prince Harry… “Tell him I’m no longer available.”

Even US Weekly splashed it up on their site this morning.

D.C. Journo on New ABC Reality Show

Sasha Horne, a 28-year-old Washington, D.C.-based journalist who most recently covered technology and trends for the RIA Novosti news agency, will appear on ABC’s murder mystery summer series “Whodunnit?”

According to a release,”Whodunnit?” is a series that puts 13 amateur sleuths’ skills to the test in a mystery reality competition. Players will use crime scene techniques to uncover evidence in a series of puzzling murders and ultimately reveal who among them is the killer. Players will form alliances, while others will choose to go it alone to win the grand prize. Each week players must solve a new crime to advance in the game. Failure to solve the crime will lead to a player’s demise, until only three are left. In the final episode, one player will unmask the killer and take home the $250,000 prize.

Sasha got her start in news with the help of NBC4 Anchor Angie Goff. “Sasha Horne was my first intern and she left some HUGE shoes to fill,” Angie wrote in a blog post. “I was so proud of her.”

Sasha says the internship wasn’t easy, including working abominable hours of 4 a.m. to 8 a.m. Monday through Friday. “Keep in mind at that time I was still working full time from 9-5 and I had grad school three evenings a week,” she wrote in a post. “The deadlines were real. As an intern I helped research and produce Angie’s daily morning segment as well as helping to respond to the SLEW of RSVP’s she’d receive for various community events. Anyone who knows Angie knows how much giving back is important to her, so managing her calendar was quite the task! Did I make mistakes, yes. Was it hard? You bet! But that’s all a part of learning and growing.”

After the internship, Sasha moved on to help produce at CNN and had an on-air gig in North Carolina. She also made appearances on TV and radio and covered politics in Atlanta.

The series premiers on June 22 at 9 p.m. ET on ABC.

NBC’s Goff Announces Pregnancy

Privacy. Who needs it?

NBC Washington reporter Angie Goff had an interesting way of telling her fans, friends and colleagues that she’s expecting another child. She posted her ultrasound on Facebook and linked to the news on Twitter.

But what is the gender of the baby? Now that’s still a mystery. On her blog, she reveals what everyone’s best guess is. For example, the ladies at her nail salon all say it’s going to be a boy. She also thinks it’s going to be a boy. But her father? He says it’s a girl. And her husband? He has no idea.
