A Century of The New Republic

The New Republic 100th Anniversary Gala in Washington, DC on November 19, 2014.

Keynote speaker, President Bill Clinton

The New Republic celebrated 100 years of powerful, innovative and thought-provoking journalism on Wednesday night, with a guest list that can be described in equal terms. From keynote speaker, President Bill Clinton, to speeches from the publication’s Chris Hughes (owner, publisher and editor-in-chief), Frank Foer (editor), and Leon Wieseltier (literary editor), even a performance from Grammy-winning jazz musician, Wynton Marsalis, the evening was filled with a spirit of cultural and civic optimism.

Not to diminish from the rest of the evening, but the former president’s speech was certainly the highlight of the gala and was nothing short of captivating. Touching on everything from the early 20th Century and the World Wars, the human genome, income inequality, immigration, education, to “identity politics” (i.e. ethnic/religious bigotry) of ISIS, Russia, and Boko Haram; he was somehow able to tie it all together, as only he could.

Mika Brzezinski’s Reaction to NYPost’s Palin-Brawl Article is a Must See

Screen Shot 2014-09-12 at 15.41.10Today on “Morning Joe,” co-hosts Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough, seated next to The Huffington Post’s White House correspondent Sam Stein, read from the New York Post article “Palin and kids have a brawl.”

The supposedly ‘drunken’ incident occurred last Saturday night and involved punches being thrown by daughter Bristol and a shirtless son Track.

The highlight of the clip though is Brzezinski’s reaction to hearing about Bristol’s alleged behavior.

Watch Brzezinski’s unsettling reaction below at the 0:25 mark.

Joe Scarborough to Join NBC News as Senior Political Analyst, ‘MTP’ as Regular Contributor

Meet the Press - Season 67In its continued revamp of NBC’s “Meet the Press” and the network’s political coverage, NBC News today announced that “Morning Joe” co-host Joe Scarborough will join the peacock network as a senior political analyst and regular contributor to “MTP” while remaining a co-host Mika Brzezinski at MSNBC. In addition, the former Florida Republican Congressman will join NBC’s election coverage team and offer political news analysis across network programming.

“Joe has one of the best political minds in the NBC family,” said NBC News political director Chuck Todd, in advance of his first Sunday as moderator of “Meet the Press.” “His love of politics and passion for debate will guarantee the kind of robust conversation that has always been a hallmark of ‘Meet the Press,’ and I look forward to the reported analysis he’ll bring to the table.” Read more

NBC Sources Tell Daily Beast’s Lloyd Grove ‘Gregory is Toast’

Gregory_1.22Yesterday, the New York Post’s “Page Six” reported that David Gregory‘s tenure as host of NBC’s “Meet the Press” may soon be coming to an end.

The Daily Beast’s Lloyd Grove wrote in a follow-up piece that, “In multiple conversations that I had with people inside and outside NBC after the item appeared, it was taken as a given that Gregory is toast.”

Grove’s analysis differs dramatically compared to what an NBC spokesperson told “Page Six’s” Emily Smith Tuesday night, saying, “We heard the same false rumors and suggest you take them with a grain of salt, as we did.” Read more

Mika Brzezinski Shares Experience Battling Eating Disorders

Morning Joe co-host and author of Obsessed: America’s Food Addiction–and My Own Mika Brzezinski was at George Washington University Wednesday to discuss eating disorders and her personal experiences for National Eating Disorders Awareness Week.

Brzezinski, who for the past 30 years has suffered several eating disorders, started off by recounting her love of and obsession with food, beginning early in her life.

“My brain would not rest, it just wouldn’t rest, until I was biting in to that first Big Mac,” said Brzezinski. She said that, during high school, she would regularly take an after school visit to McDonald’s for two Big Macs and two large fries, and would obsess over it the entire day.

Early in her career, when she set off into local television, Brzezinski said she would run 12 miles a day in an attempt to look more like the “beauty queens” who were getting promoted around her.

After having her first child, a then size-eight Brzezinski recalled an interview with NBC in which she was told afterwards, “I’m sure you’re very talented…I love your family background…Your education is great…But you look terrible. You need to lose some weight, drink a little water. and come back to me in six months.”

And she did. After several months of working hard to get in shape, Brzezinski sent her NBC contact a photo of herself. She was brought in for an audition and got the job.

For more on Mika’s experience navigating the media profession while battling eating disorders, look to GW’s website toward the end of the week for video of her lecture.

Afternoon Reading List 08.26.13.

Morning has spoken — MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski and CBS’s Gayle King usually spend their mornings talking alongside Joe Scarborough and Charlie Rose to television viewers. But the two spent a late morning recently talking with NYT‘s Philip Galanes over an early lunch. As Galanes notes, lunch comes mid-morning when your day starts at 3:30 a.m. The trio discussed the differences in dynamics between themselves and the co-hosts of Brzezinski’s “Morning Joe” and King’s “CBS This Morning.” They also talked about their favorite interviews they’ve done and about parenting, with Galanes guiding the conversation. Overall, it reads like a few friends chatting about work and life over brunch.

Why you should read it: Galanes is as much a part of the piece as King and Brzezinski, which makes for an quirky, entertaining dynamic. When he suggests Mika is just a sidekick to Joe, Gayle jumps in and says Mika is no “mouseburger.” Galanes’ interview offers glimpse into their lives outside the studio. Plus, bonus points on the headline: “For two female news anchors, morning has spoken.” Read more

Seriously. Mika Thinks Huma is ‘Extraordinary’

MSNBC “Morning Joe” Co-host Mika Brzezinski had an extraordinary reaction to the extraordinarily brave Huma Abedin, wife of New York mayoral hopeful and extraordinary ass Anthony Weiner this morning. But even more extraordinary than Abedin was the number of times Mika used the word “extraordinary” in her morning speech on yesterday’s Weiner circus. Our count: 5 uses of the word or variation of the word extraordinary. Now that, is truly extraordinary.

“I immediately had a sympathetic reaction…there are so many absolutely people out there you wouldn’t believe it. …I thought it was extraordinary when she spoke, absolutely extraordinary…because we’ve seen women standing by their husbands while they professed to committing adultery or cheating on their wives but what Huma did was step up and step in for a guy who has disgraced her in a way that steps out of the realm of what anybody in mainstream political coverage sees as normal behavior…for what she did I thought it was absolutely extraordinary. I was riveted by her. having said that, then you look at the other side of this which is the one other narrative out there. And that is that she is a brilliant woman..she is extraordinary well liked she is extraordinarily popular and she is extraordinarily successful and who does she work for? A woman who has been through this herself. A woman who is a pro at taking a bad situation, an embarrassing situation and owning it and winning in the long run. And that is someone who might be the next president of the United States, Hillary Clinton.”

The Calendar Boys of BuffPost

You’ve heard of The Beltway Boys — how about the BuffPost Boys? Sam Stein and the guys over at HuffPost (dubbed “BuffPost” by MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough this week) have given up shreds of dignity for charity purposes. Some of them had to know this wouldn’t end well. This is what happens when you put yourself on a calendar. Teenage girls are warned about stuff like this.

Asked if he felt like a male model, Stein told FBCD, “It’s for a really good cause. I’m glad I got to play a part in it.” Even when pushed and prodded, he refused to spice up his quote. He also caught a lot of heat during an appearance on “Morning Joe” earlier in the week. The hosts made fun of his plaid shirt. Mika Brzezinski called him “Calendar Boy” and cracked on him, saying, “I’m so distracted after seeing that calendar that I can’t take him seriously.” And then after using the word “outlandish” to describe something, Scarborough interrupted, “Outlandish? Outlandish says the man who wears a plaid shirt.” Brzezinksi soon grew serious and praised Stein for the good cause. It’s RaiseForWomen Challenge, which assists female-focused charities.

The guys apparently took their “cues” from Chippendales and NYC firefighters. But will they get naked for this thing? Washington Bureau Chief Ryan Grim remarked, “I would say that, for better or for worse, the calendar speaks pretty well for itself.”

Mika Brzezinksi Shows Boob Shot on ‘Morning Joe’

As they showcased the upcoming issue of GQ on this morning’s “Morning Joe” on MSNBC, Co-host Mika Brzezinski wondered about all the boobage in the magazine. We’re talking full-on breast shots that she flashed for the TV screen.

The story with the naked breasts concerned five-day cruises with Kid Rock.

The hosts were appropriately disgusted and outraged and quickly crumpled the magazine so the boobs were hidden. But not before Brzezinski flashed viewers with this bold shot. Those are Joe Scarborough‘s fingers at the top crease of the magazine.

One question. If nudity isn’t allowed on national cable TV, are pictures of naked breasts acceptable?

See the other shots and chyron that helped hide the picture of the guest holding up the nudy feature. Read more
