President Praises Hanks At Kennedy Center Honors

Kennedy Center HonorsPresident Barack Obama saluted this year’s Kennedy Center honorees last night – Tom Hanks, Lily Tomlin, Sting, Al Green and Patricia McBride – but heaped particular praise on Academy award-winning actor, Tom Hanks.

“Tom’s career began just like so many Hollywood legends — dressing in drag for a show called ‘Bosom Buddies,’ kung-fu fighting The Fonz on ‘Happy Days’” joked the President.

“As the years passed, he told us ‘there’s no crying in baseball,’ ‘life is like a box of chocolates.’  He told ‘Houston, we have a problem.’  And as a cartoon cowboy, he showed us we can always keep our faith in a little boy.”

Obama continued on a more serious note, “Tom isn’t known simply for his characters — he’s known for his character.”

John Oliver Ends Season with a Bang from the ‘Salmon Cannon’

Ahead of his performance tomorrow at “The Concert for Valor” on the National Mall, John Oliver ended the inaugural season of HBO’s “Last Week Tonight” with a segment poking fun at a Washington state news story which featured a cannon that could launch salmon over dams.

Oliver gathered an impressive list of his celebrity buddies being shot in the face with the “Salmon Cannon,” including Jon Stewart, Jimmy Fallon, Tom Hanks, Dwight Howard, Seth Meyers, Anderson Cooper, Mario Batali, Rachel Ray, David Letterman, Wanda Sykes, Stephen Colbert, Wayne Brady, Meredith Vieira, and Joel McHale. Even Homer Simpson and R2D2 made appearances.

Don’t forget, “The Concert for Valor” is a free event tomorrow on the National Mall in honor of Veterans Day. (Oliver’s wife Kate Norley is an Iraq War veteran.) Click here for more information.

Hanks to Gift New Coffee Maker to WH Press Corps

FishbowlDC hears that Tammy Haddad will be presenting a gift at the White House today. But it’s not for President Obama or First Lady. Haddad will be delivering a brand new coffee machine for the White House press corps on behalf of actor Tom Hanks.

Hanks, who gifted an espresso maker to the press room nearly six years ago, noticed it was looking a little shabby during a recent visit to the White House.

“We’re just trying to combat sleep deprivation,” Hanks said.

Video from Hanks’ and Spielberg’s March 11th visit to the WH press room below.

Reel Journalism Screens “The Soloist”

Last night former WaPo VP Pat Butler joined Nick Clooney and LA Times columnist Steve Lopez for a screening of “The Soloist” at the AFI Silver Theater.

The Newseum and American University hosted the event as a part of the Reel Journalism film series, which explores the intersection of movies and journalism. An intersection that Clooney calls “sometimes smooth, sometimes bumpy, always interesting.”

Following the screening Lopez discussed his experience turning his now famous column of his relationship with homeless musician and schizophrenic Nathaniel Ayers into a book and eventually a feature film, staring Jamie Foxx and Robert Downey Jr. “I went from journalist to advocate, it was extremely odd.” said Lopez, who was in town for today’s Capitol Hill briefing “Honoring the Soloist – A Congressional Briefing on Homelessness and Mental Illness.”

Lopez added that Paramount also considered Tom Hanks and George Clooney for his role, played by Downey. Also interesting- the casting for Ayer’s character: Denzel Washington and Will Smith were also considered.

On May 18th Reel Journalism will host a discussion with George Stephanopoulos and screening of “The War Room,” a documentary of Bill Clinton’s ’92 campaign.
