But given that Lemire felt The Hangover Part II was the worst film of 2011, her cheering of the third installment in her final AP film review and on TYT Network show What the Flick?! is almost as surprising as her exit from the wire service right after colleague David Germain. The bigger picture here is that Deadline fudged some previously published information. They are certainly not alone on the Internet in that regard. But a trade that consistently likes to trumpet its superiority should, we think, be opting for sweeter correction music (redlining, a footnote,…).
The following sentence is no longer part of Pete Hammond‘s May 15 Deadline coverage of the opening night party at the Cannes Film Festival for The Great Gatsby. It was shortened, rewritten and made parenthetical not long after the item went live with this:
Clearly there seems to be a group of pseudo-critics who like to try and take down a movie, and this [The Great Gatsby] was a target, even though some of them (I am talking about you, The Wrap) obviously had never read the book.
In the space of a few days this time last year, film critic Alonso Duralde went from tweeting about the vile acts of an LA arsonist, to revealing he had become a victim of carport incineration, to thanking the public at large for donations to cover the purchase of a new vehicle. As such, his experiences stand as one of the more unconventionally heartwarming news stories of 2012 involving an LA journalist.

KTLA Reporter Uses Old iPad to Report About New iPad
A wonderful example of field reporting iNGENUITY.
It’s that time of year again when professional movie reviewers butt heads with a mind-numbing Adam Sandler comedy.
TheWrap’s Alonso Duralde sums up That’s My Boy as “two laughs, sprinkled over a giant bowl of revulsion.” But what really caught FishbowlLA’s attention is this critic’s suggestion that a final-act narrative turn “ranks among the most desperate and tasteless comedic plot twists in Hollywood history.”
Really? Wow, we might have to morbidly check out the June 18 Columbia Pictures release just to see what Duralde is retching about. Although no doubt the cat will soon be out the garbage bag via Twitter and Facebook.
As we mentioned earlier on the ‘bowl, film critics Alonso Duralde and Dave White lost their cars to the L.A. arsonist. The couple’s insurance didn’t cover the cost of replacing both vehicles, and film critics are chronically underpaid, so friends did some fundraising on their behalf.
Well, as of this past weekend, the fellas are carless no more! They’ve purchased a used Mazda to get them to all those film screenings.

This past Friday, TheWrap launched a dramatic expansion of its content syndication partnership with Reuters America. In place of the Hollywood Reporter and Billboard, the website will try to help Reuters aggressively go after AP clients, aided by new film critics Alonso Duralde and Leah Rozen and added music critic Chris Willman.
It’s a major coup for website founder Sharon Waxman. FishbowlLA caught up with the former New York Times reporter via telephone on the quiet afternoon of July 1 to get the scoop on how the deal came about.
“Reuters terminated the relationship with the Hollywood Reporter,” Waxman confirmed. “This has been in the works for a while now. It’s a very big deal for Reuters to do this, because they have clients who’ve been getting a certain kind of content need for quite a long time and are accustomed to that. So they have to untangle that and sort of prepare their clients for the fact that it’s going to change.”
The LA Film Festival just announced the jurors for its narrative, documentary and shorts competitions. Looks like Slake‘s Laurie Ochoa is going to have a busy weekend, because not only is she among the staff of the pop-up newsroom Engine28.com, she’s judging the documentary category. Alongside her are Jeff Malmberg, director of the brilliant film Marwencol and executive director of the International Documentary Association Michael Lumpkin. Lynn Shelton, Giant Robot‘s Eric Nakamura and screenwriter Daniel Waters are handling the narrative competition while casting director Margery Simkin, film critic Alonso Duralde, and actress Lisa Gay Hamilton are the shorts jury.

Just eight months after former Salon.com contributor Stephanie Zacharek was announced as chief film critic at Movieline.com, the website is proudly sharing the news today of Elvis Mitchell‘s appointment as… chief film critic. Mitchell is of course the former New York Times staffer who was briefly lined up for Roger Ebert‘s relaunch of At the Movies and currently hosts weekly chat program “The Treatment” on KCRW.
“Movieline.com represents the future of film journalism and I love what they have been doing,” says Mitchell. “Any place smart enough to bring Stephanie Zacharek to the party is definitely a site I want to be a part of.”
