Outside Seeks Inspiring Adventure Stories With a Strong News Hook

Outside-Oct-2014-coverOutside, which was founded in 1977, has gone through plenty of reinventions. These days, the mag’s audience is 70 percent male and the pub targets not only those whose days typically involve black-diamond runs, but the city office worker as well, holed up in his cubicle as he saves vacation days for an epic outdoor adventure.

Best bets for Outside newbies are “Dispatches,” from the FOB and “Bodywork,” the magazine’s fitness section, which accepts news items as short as 100 words and reports as long as 1200. Whether you’re pitching stories on exploration, sports, fitness or the environment, make sure it’s timely:

Don’t pitch travel roundups without a news peg. “A pitch on the best hikes in the National Parks probably won’t get you far,” said [senior editor Abe Streep]. But travel news that leads to actionable service — say, a story on how the Grand Canyon’s new permitting system for rafters affects readers — is very welcome. News that leads to service is the ideal: new lodges, new technology, new training tools.

Mashable Firms Up European Bureau

The second largest city and country audience for Mashable after the U.S. is – somewhat logically – London and the UK. Today, the site formalized its imminent expansion plans into the British realm.

“The launch of editorial operations in London is a big moment for Mashable,” said Jim Roberts, chief content officer and executive editor of Mashable. “With Blathnaid and Tim leading the way, we can create for the UK audience a custom version of Mashable’s unique coverage of global news, technology reports and the latest on digital culture.”

Michael Bloomberg Has No Time for Feelings

Michael Bloomberg GMichael Bloomberg recently returned to Bloomberg LP as its CEO, and for good reason. If he hadn’t, he would have been stuck listening to his girlfriend Diana Taylor talk. We know. Terrible. Worse than that, according to Bloomberg, Taylor would’ve been talking about feelings. Gross.

The New York Post reports that when Bloomberg was asked why he went back to his company, he replied, “The alternative, in my case, is staying home and talking to Diana about feelings. If that doesn’t get you back to work, I don’t know what would.”

Jezebel Editor Questions ‘Deliberately Misleading’ GMA Reporting

Newly crowned Miss America Kira Kazantsev was on Good Morning America today, rebutting the harshest elements of Jezebel’s Monday exclusive about her alleged involvement in some Hofstra University hazing.

Jezebel news editor Erin Gloria Ryan questioned, via Twitter, the soft handling of the controversy by a news show airing on the same network as the beauty pageant. She has followed with further accusations of lazy journalism:

It should also be noted that in “reporting” on this story, GMA did not reach out to me or anyone at Jezebel for comment or clarification; they just had Kazantsev on to deliver her talking points to a sympathetic anchor on the TV home of Miss America. If ABC had reached out, they would have known that since the story ran, we’ve learned more, and that things are still developing on our end. It would have been a tougher interview. But that’s clearly not what GMA wanted.

If you go to the new In Touch Weekly website unveiled today by Bauer XCel Media, it appears at first as if there is only a single story posted. Something about Michael Sheen, Sarah Silverman and matrimonial handicapping.

But start scrolling down and the next story… and the next… and the next appear one after the other as if out of Web thin air, bannered in each case by large, full-width photos. Clicking on an image opens up the article text below, within the preserved infinite scroll.

Clinton Cargill Joins Businessweek, Jill Geisler Changes Roles at Poynter

A couple Revolving Door items for you today, involving Bloomberg Businessweek and Poynter. Details are below.

  • Clinton Cargill has been named the new director of photography for Bloomberg Businessweek. Cargill was most recently the New York Times Magazine’s photo editor, a role he held since 2006. He had been with the Times since 2004.
  • Jill Geisler is changing her role at Poynter to Poynter affiliate. The change will go into effect in January. Geisler had served as senior faculty, leadership and management for 16 years. Beginning next year, Geisler will focus more on her own private leadership training consulting.

NY Times Launches Realtime Newsfeed ‘Watching’

The New York Times has launched a new breaking news feature on its homepage. “Watching” is a realtime news aggregator that includes tweets from Times staffers, videos, photos, Times headlines and more.

It’s basically a multimedia news ticker, keeping readers up to date on the latest, biggest news.

Watching is located just above the nytimes.com fold. For now, it is jam packed with information on the ISIS airstrikes. It will be interesting to see how well Watching works when multiple big news stories break.

Watching is overseen by Times editors Marcus Mabry and Jennifer Preston.

Eater Relaunch KOs Toronto, Vancouver Sites

EaterRelaunchAll is fair in love and waffles. Or something like that.

Traffic may be up 250% since Vox Media acquired Eater eight months ago. But evidently, that upsurge wasn’t coming from Canada. As part of the site’s revamp, the Vancouver and Toronto local sites have been shuttered. Only Montreal remains, headed by Ian Harrison.

Folks in Toronto weren’t too surprised. Per Toronto Life, the local site kicked off with an apparently embarrassing list of 38 “Essential” restaurants and had a lot of churn:

Eater had trouble holding onto a Toronto-based editor, cycling through three in about eight months (the first, Carolyn Grisold, left about a week before the site’s official launch party), and its real estate–minded sister site, Curbed Toronto, stopped publishing two weeks ago.

Shape Makes Several Additions to Edit and Publishing Teams

Shape has added several new members to its editorial and publishing teams. Details are below.

    • Elizabeth Goodman Artis has been promoted to chief content director of Shape. She had served as Shape’s executive editor since last year. Goodman Artis previously served as Prevention.com’s deputy editor and executive editor-at-large of Prevention.
    • Isabel Burton has been named executive editor. Burton comes to Shape from Self, where she held the same role. Prior to joining Self, Burton served as Cosmo’s deputy editor. She is succeeding Goodman Artis.
    • Audrey Slater joins as executive fashion director. Slater has been a fashion editor and stylist for more than two decades, working in the fashion departments of Redbook, Glamour, Twist, and Ladies’ Home Journal. She served as Redbook‘s fashion director for 10 years.
    • Jaclyn Emerick has been named fitness director. Emerick is another defector from Self, where she most recently served as fitness editor.
    • Rory Evans has been named deputy editor. Evans has served as a contributing editor at Allure, and her work has appeared in publications such as Elle, GQ, In Style, HGTV Magazine and New York.
    • On the publishing side, Emily Kelton joins as executive beauty director. She comes to Shape from Sports Illustrated, where she served as franchise sales manager.
    • Also on the publishing side, Natalie Mattera has been named executive account director. She joins Shape from People Stylewatch, where she served as executive beauty director.
