Wired and USC Launch Online Masters Class

Wired_logoWired is teaming up with USC to launch an online Master’s degree in integrated design, business and technology. The goal of the course is to “educate creative thinkers and technologists to better equip them to transform the world of industry and enterprise,” according to a release.

“We’ve been thinking for years about what a university curriculum with WIRED would look like, and now we have a chance to build it with a terrific partner,” said Wired’s editor-in-chief, Scott Dadich, in a statement. “Taking the best from USC and Wired, we can teach discipline and disruption, business fundamentals, and the very latest innovation models from Silicon Valley. This is going to be thrilling.”

Students who sign up for the course will have access to Wired’s headquarters and its editors and writers. The first offering of the degree will come in the 2015/2016 academic year.

Quentin Tarantino, Movie Theater Owner

It’s the best succession imaginable. After helping Los Angeles repertory house the New Beverly Cinema for years as a silent partner (and owner-landlord since 2007), filmmaker Quentin Tarantino has taken over the operation of the mid-city enterprise and is officially launching himself for the next few months as the joint’s chief programmer.

He talked to Elvis Mitchell about the first wave of big-screen goodies on the latest episode of weekly KCRW-FM program The Treatment. Columbia Pictures, as a reward for the box office performance of Django Unchained, gifted Tarantino with a remastered print of the late Paul Mazursky‘s classic Bob & Ted & Carol & Alice. Mazursky even did the color correcting. The new print will be shown tonight and Thursday as part of a special two-day tribute to Mazursky, on a double bill with Blume in Love:

“We played this double feature at the New Beverly about two years ago, and Paul Mazursky showed up,” Tarantino tells Mitchell. “I was there, and we had an impromptu question-and-answer session. It ended up being crazy illuminating, really, really lovely.”

Brooklyn Blogger Competes on Sports Jeopardy!

AlexDeFrankPicIn the middle of the contestants’ panel for Episode #2 of Sports Jeopardy! is nascent Brooklyn sports blogger Alex DeFrank. Following each episode’s TV airing, the competitions are posted to Crackle on Wednesdays.

DeFrank’s patter-portion with host Dan Patrick addressed an age-old cliche about bloggers:

“Here’s the problem with sports bloggers,” suggested Patrick. “Everybody says you’re guys in your underwear, in the basement. True?”

“I thought you said there was a problem?” DeFrank joked back.

“I’m jealous!” exclaimed Patrick.

Crain’s 5boros Debut Highlights Pizza, Yoko Ono

The most intriguing aspect of “5Boro Pizza Tour,” one of the articles in this week’s Fall 2014 debut of quarterly print magazine Crain’s 5 Boros, is the author. The piece was written by Thrillist New York editor Andrew Zimmer as part of a special partnership with the new Crain’s consumer lifestyle publication.

Ditto for “John Lennon Bus Visits 5 Boroughs.” In that case, the Web-only byline belongs to the founder and executive director of the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus, Brian Rothschild.

Overseeing the spinoff, day-to-day, is Crain’s New York Business deputy managing editor Valerie Block. From this week’s launch announcement:

Crain’s 5boros, with an initial circulation of 25,000, will serve as a trail guide for urban explorers eager to discover the city’s new vibrancy. “5boros readers are supremely interested in pursuing their hometown more fully, from the little shop around the corner to the last stop on the subway map,” Crain’s New York Business and 5 Boros editor Glenn Coleman wrote in the premiere issue. “They are New Yorkers who embrace the ever-changing nature of the city’s five boroughs.”

NY Times Mag Adds Tamar Adler

Despite massive newsroom cuts at the New York Times, the Times Magazine continues to grow as it gears up for a relaunch. Tamar Adler  — author of An Everlasting Meal: Cooking With Economy and Grace and a Vogue contributor — is joining the Times Mag as a contributing writer. Adler will contribute to a food column along with other writers, including Mark Bittman and Sam Sifton.

Adler is the just the latest addition to the Times Mag, as editor Jake Silverstein reshapes it in his vision. The glossy recently added Emily Bazelon and Bill Wasik, and Silverstein has cut some unpopular features while adding new ones.

The revamped Times Mag doesn’t debut until next year, but some changes are already here. Adler’s first column will be available in this week’s issue, along with the new essay feature, “First” (the inaugural edition was written by Mark Leibovich).

Derek Jeter Launches Sports Site ‘The Players’ Tribune’

Derek Jeter did not take much time to enjoy his retirement. The legendary Yankees shortstop has launched The Players’ Tribune, a sports/lifestyle site with one major difference than the rest — the content will be by athletes.

In an introduction, Jeter wrote that he wants the site to serve as a place where pro athletes can “connect directly with our fans, with no filter.”

“Over the next few months, we’ll be introducing a strong core of athlete editors and contributors who will shape the site into an online community filled with first-person stories and behind-the-scenes content,” explained Jeter. “My goal is for the site to ultimately transform how athletes and newsmakers share information, bringing fans closer than ever to the games they love.”

NY Times to Cut 100 Newsroom Jobs, Shutter NYT Opinion

This is not going to be a good day for many New York Times staffers. The paper plans to cut a whopping 100 people from its newsroom. The last time the Times let go of this many people was in 2009.

The reduction in staff is — of course — a cost-cutting move. ”The job losses are necessary to control our costs and to allow us to continue to invest in the digital future of The New York Times, but we know that they will be painful both for the individuals affected and for their colleagues,” read a note from Times publisher Arthur Sulzberger and CEO Mark Thompson.

The Times plans to offer buyouts to staffers, but will resort to layoffs if enough people don’t accept the deals.

Piers Morgan Named Editor-at-Large of MailOnline (TVNewser)
Former CNN host Piers Morgan is joining MailOnline as editor-at-large. Morgan will write several times a week, while pursing new TV ventures in the U.S. He is a former editor of British tabloids the News of The World and the Daily Mirror. THR MailOnline is the online version of the U.K.’s Daily Mail newspaper and claims to be the biggest English-language newspaper website in the world. Morgan announced in September that he’d left CNN, several months after his eponymous talk show was canceled. He added in tweets about his departure that he’d turned down a two-year deal from CNN president Jeff Zucker to host several interview specials. Politico / Dylan Byers on Media “As editor-at-large (U.S.) I plan on breaking down the biggest stories that matter to Americans and analyzing them in a way that will generate discussion and create debate,” Morgan, 49, said in a statement. Deadline Hollywood In the U.K., Morgan is known for being named youngest ever editor of the News of The World and youngest national newspaper editor in Britain in half a century, when Rupert Murdoch gave the 28-year-old him the gig in 1994. After two years, he joined the Daily Mirror as editor-in-chief, which he left in 2004 and became a media columnist and host of interview shows on ITV and the BBC.
