American Idol Back on Top as Weekly Ratings Winner

As American Idol began to trim the field before unveiling its Top 24 singers tonight, the show held the top two positions for the week.

Hollywood Week gave way to a Las Vegas trip, as fans tuned in on WNYW/Channel 5.

The Wednesday night telecast was number one, according to Nielsen, with an estimated 1.4 million viewers and a 7.2 rating. The next night, Idol took second with 1.1 million viewers and a 5.8 rating.  Incidentally, with the Idol lead-in at its side, the Fox 5 News at 10 had a strong night at number 24 (610,000/3.1).

NBC continues to get big numbers still season from The Voice. It was number four with 934,000 people watching on WNBC and a 4.8 rating.

As for number three, CBS’ NCIS squeezed in with 1 million viewers and a 5.2 rating.

WCBS also had a good showing from 60 Minutes tying for fifth place (862,000/4.4).

MSG Network had two rare appearances in the Top 30 last week. But with the advent of “Linsanity,” Knicks games have become a hot ticket in the arena and everywhere else.

The February 17th contest against the New Orleans Hornets landed in a tie for 14 (747,000/3.8). For the record, the Knicks lost the game, their first with sensation Jeremy Lin in the lineup.

In the February 15th game with the Kings, the Knicks, Lin, and MSG were 28th as well (586,000/3.0).

On the eve of Whitney Houston’s funeral, ABC’s 20/20 had a special two-hour program on the life and death of the superstar. The show tied for 17th (722,000/3.7).
