One year since its launch, online news hub The Daily Beast has named a president, Stephen Colvin. Colvin, executive vice president of CNET/CBS Interactive, will report directly to the site’s founder and editor-in-chief, Tina Brown.
Colvin was formerly the president and CEO of Maxim publisher Dennis Publishing, and helped oversee the company’s $225 million sale to the Quadrangle Group before joining CNET. At The Daily Beast, Colvin is charged with “revenue generation, audience development, brand development and social media,” the company said. He’ll also oversee the Beast Books imprint and develop new revenue streams, like events.

Seasoned cross-platform media executive joins after a year of solid growth
NEW YORK — November 20, 2009 — The Daily Beast, the award winning news and current affairs site and an operating business of IAC [NASDAQ: IACI], today announced the appointment of Stephen Colvin as President. In this role, Colvin will oversee all aspects of the business, reporting directly to Tina Brown, the co-founder and Editor-in-Chief.

Colvin will have primary responsibility for revenue generation, audience development, brand development and social media. He will also oversee the recently announced Beast Books imprint as well as develop additional revenue streams including an event series.
“Throughout my career I have been deeply involved with building media brands,” said Colvin. “Only a handful of startups have achieved the level of success of The Daily Beast in their first year and I am delighted to join Tina Brown, Caroline Marks and Edward Felsenthal to continue building the brand.”

Prior to joining The Daily Beast, Colvin served as Executive Vice President of CNET/CBS Interactive, where he held full operational responsibility for the Entertainment and Lifestyle divisions. During this time, he served on the CNET/CBS interactive executive board.
Colvin previously served as President and CEO of Dennis Publishing. In this role, he launched the company and numerous magazines in the U.S., including Blender, Maxim and The Week, also creating the digital wing of the company, Dennis Digital, in 2005, and expanding the business into other media platforms and overseas.
