Mort Zuckerman on News of the World Shutdown: ‘Black Day for the Newspaper Industry’

Mort Zuckerman, who owns the Daily News, went on CNBC this afternoon to talk about the shuttering of the UK’s News of the World, owned by his New York media rival Rupert Murdoch.

“I tip my hat to him for doing that,” said Zuckerman of Murdoch’s decision to fold the 168-year-old newspaper as of this Sunday. “I don’t think a lot of people would have done that. I think he just realized he had to take a decisive step to accept the responsibility for the newspaper that he owns.”

CNBC anchor Michelle Caruso-Cabrera asked, “Tell me you’re not reading some of this with a little bit of glee?”

“I’m not. It doesn’t do the newspaper industry any good. It doesn’t do the credibility of journalism any good,” said Zuckerman
