Publishing Vet Don Linn Chats About Murdoch, HarperCollins & Quartet Press On The Menu

Today on the media- bistro.com Morning Media Menu podcast, hosts Jason Boog of GalleyCat and AgencySpy‘s Matt Van Hoven were joined book publishing vet Don Linn, co-founder of new digital publisher, Quartet Press.

The first topic of conversation was News Corp.‘s earnings report and CEO Rupert Murdoch‘s announcement that he plans to charge for access to all of his newspapers’ and new channels’ Web sites in the near future. Linn added that News Corp.-owned HarperCollins reported a big loss as well, and it looks like things won’t get any better soon.

“Unfortunately, great [book] lists no longer really quite get you over the hump because there are so many dysfunctional parts of the supply chain, so many problems with retailers, so many problems with the basic traditional publishing model that really present some problems that even some of the best publishers — and I would put HarperCollins in that group — have trouble overcoming,” Linn said.

Now, smaller and nontraditional publishers have an opportunity to grow as traditional publishing houses stumble, he said.

Also discussed: Time Out New York‘s list of alternative career paths for media professionals and Linn’s new endeavor at Quartet.
