Bravo ‘Newlyweds’ Alaska and Kim Dish on Reality TV Instafame

While it was a bit more subdued than usual at Michael’s today with some of the glitterati off to Cannes and a few others up in Greenwich watching Prince Harry play polo (our invite must have gotten lost in the mail),  the usual mix of editors (Anne Fulenwider, Lucy Danziger) and media moguls (David Zinczenko) were in full power lunch mode celebrating each other’s successes and hatching their next big deals.

I was joined today by Kimberly Cherebin and Alaska Gedeon, stars of the new docu-series Newlyweds: The First Year, which premiered May 6 on Bravo. Also in attendance were the network’s PR marvels, Jennifer Geisser and Julia Nietsch, as well as the happy couple’s manager, Camille White Stern. The show is a hit, having snagged over 1 million viewers for the first episode. With Kimberly stuck in traffic en route from the studio where she was styling Justine Skye‘s new video, I got a chance to chat with Alaska first. I asked him what in the world would possess anyone to allow cameras to follow them during their entire first year of marriage. He told me he’d been absolutely opposed to doing the show at first, and Kimberly asked him “about six or seven times” before he finally agreed. Looking back on the experience (shooting wrapped earlier this year), Alaska said having the details of your daily life play out for all the world to see “forces you to raise the standard of who you are: how you treat others and especially how you treat your wife.” He then added brightly, “It’s like a mirror and like therapy.” So did he like everything he saw reflected back at him? “I just don’t think I’m that big of a jerk,” he said with a laugh. (After meeting him, I’m inclined to agree). “My sarcasm doesn’t always read well on camera.” He also told me that it wasn’t until after he viewed the scene where he and Kimberly discussed their bi-coastal marriage that he realized just how “heartbroken” Kimberly was at the prospect of their separation.

When Kimberly arrived, I asked her why she was so enthusiastic about  doing the show, and she admitted that she didn’t exactly know what she was getting into. “At first, I thought it was one of those David Tutera>-type ‘planning your wedding’ shows, and I thought that would be fun, but it was nothing like that,” she explained. Once she did understand that she and Alaska would be agreeing to 10-hour shooting days over the course of year and be required to use their ‘Couples’ Cam’ on each other to capture intimate moments (not that kind, silly), she remained undaunted. “It seems like when you see marriages on TV you either see these fairy tales or something pretty terrible. We have really ‘extreme’ careers, and this was a chance to show how you balance it all.”

Newsweek/The Daily Beast Adds New Editor

Abigail Pesta has been hired by Newsweek/The Daily Beast to be its Editorial Director, Women in the World. Pesta was most recently Editor-at-Large for Marie Claire.

As you can guess by the title, she’ll be overseeing women’s coverage. The New York Observer says there will be plenty of that to come:

Women in the World will have a large editorial presence across Newsweek Daily Beast platforms, according to a Power Point presentation obtained by The Observer. There will be a branded vertical on the Daily Beast, dedicated content in Newsweek and on Beast TV, as well as a Women in the World magazine and a Women in the World books imprint.

The 2011 Front Page Awards

FishbowlNY was fortunate enough to be invited as one of Marie Claire magazine’s guests to this year’s Front Page Awards, presented by The Newswomen’s Club of New York, honoring female journalists across a variety of media. The title’s editor at large, Abigail Pesta, was among the evening’s honorees for her piece “An American Tragedy,” which provided a harrowing, in-depth glimpse into honor killings in the U.S.

This year’s dinner was held at the Down Town Club in the Financial District and hosted by Toni Reinhold, president of the Newswomen’s Club and a reporter for Reuters.

Among the bold names at the event was anchor Dan Rather, who attended in support of his colleagues at “Dan Rather Reports,” several of whom won awards last night.

Hearst Promotes Sophia Stuart To Lead Digital For International Unit

No doubt about it, Hearst Corp. has been busy hiring, promoting and bringing on new people. Abigail Pesta moved from deputy director to editor-at-large for Marie Claire last month, four executives joined the board of directors in October and former investment banker Mitchell Scherzer was appointed as a new VP and CFO of the company in early November.

So it’s no surprise that the company, which did make some cuts this year along with everyone else, is continuing to hire from within. Today, Hearst announced that Sophia Stuart — who most recently worked as executive director for mobile content for Hearst Magazines Digital Media — would be moving on up to executive director of digital content for Hearst Magazines International.

Says Stuart, “I have enjoyed my time working with Hearst’s domestic magazine brands on mobile expansion, and look forward to working with [HMI's president and CEO Duncan Edwards] and his team to bring new ideas and relationships to our many magazine partnerships internationally. There’s enormous potential in the digital space and I hope to be able to leverage those opportunities.”

Marie Claire Promotes Deputy Editor

Abigail-Pesta-Portrait-new-sm.jpgAbigail Pesta has been named editor-at-large of Marie Claire, one of Hearst Corporation‘s women’s titles. Pesta had previously been deputy editor at the glossy, after a switch from Glamour magazine, where she also served in an editorial capacity.

Pesta was smart to make the move, as Glamour is owned by Condé Nast, which has delivered so many cutbacks recently that they barely have any staff left to promote. And while Hearst has had to make some concessions last year and earlier this year (cutting Good Housekeeping staffers, cutting back permalancers, and the folding of CosmoGirl), it has saved the publisher from any big losses so far this year, at least in comparison to many of its competitors.

Pesta’s new role will involve “additional writing and traveling for the magazine,” which sounds like a pretty stellar way to make a living, if you ask us.
