Hugo Lindgren Segues to The Hollywood Reporter

In case you missed the meeting this morning, I wanted to introduce you to our newest addition here, Hugo Lindgren. I am thrilled to tell you that Hugo is joining The Hollywood Reporter as acting editor while a team including executive editor Matthew Belloni, creative director Shanti Marlar and photo and video director Jennifer Laski get going working on Billboard with me. Hugo will be serving in my stead day-to-day (with me always available and in the loop… perhaps just not ticking off every caption) for the next three months.

Ashlea Halpern Departs New York

Ashlea Halpern is leaving New York for Bon Appétit. Halpern had been a senior  strategist editor for New York, overseeing the Strategist section. At Bon Appétit she’ll serve as a special projects editor.

“One of the nice things about how generous ASME has been to us in the magazine section category was that each time I seemed to be on the podium accepting this award, it was for a different Strategist editor,” Adam Moss, New York’s editor, wrote in a memo obtained by WWD. “Next year I have no doubt we’ll be deserving once again.”

Halpern starts at Bon Appétit in two weeks. July 10.

Graydon Carter’s Contract Negotiations Stall, Possible Successors Discussed

Graydon Carter, the 63-year-old editor-in-chief of Vanity Fair, is currently negotiating a new contract with Condé Nast. According to The New York Post, the main hold-up to getting the deal done is that Carter’s lawyer — Allan Grubman — is pushing for a signing bonus and a raise for Carter.

The other issue at hand is that Carter isn’t sure how much longer he wants to stay at Vanity Fair. He has already been the editor of the magazine for 21 years, so you can hardly blame him. Carter also has other interests, such his overseeing his popular restaurants and producing films.

Charles Townsend, Condé’s CEO, told the Post that all is well and “There are no plans for anyone to succeed Graydon at Vanity Fair.” Which means, of course, it’s time to guess who is succeeding Carter at Vanity Fair! Below are some names that have been circulated:

Jody Rosen Joins New York as Pop Critic

Jody Rosen has been named New York’s pop critic. Rosen’s work has appeared in a variety of publications, such as Entertainment Weekly and The New Yorker. He was also previously a senior critic at Rolling Stone and the music critic for Slate.

“Jody is a sharp critic and beautiful, lucid writer with broad tastes, unerring radar and a knack for finding big ideas between pop’s niches,” said Adam Moss, editor-in-chief of New York, in a statement. “We’re excited to have him.”

Rosen — who starts June 1 — is taking the pop critic spot from Nitsuh Abebe, who is now a general culture and features writer for the magazine.

New York Debuts Revamped ‘The Cut’

The bigger, better version of New York’s “The Cut,” is here. The new stand alone site — meant to compete with the likes of Jezebel and Vogue — certainly looks better than the old one. The photographs stand out more, the overall look is slicker and the editorial is divided into five, easy-to-locate sections — Fashions, Beauty, Goods, Fame, and Love & War, which will be filled with up to 40 new piece per day.

“New York has a long history publishing compelling fashion content in print, and, for the last four years, covering fashion news online,” said New York’s editor-in-chief Adam Moss, in a press release. “The Cut is far more ambitious—an immersive experience that has both the high impact visual quality of a glossy and the loose dynamism of the web.”

The Cut is led by creative director Stella Bugbee; features editor Maureen O’Connor; senior editor Charlotte Cowles; and beauty editor Christina Han.

Writers Discuss Writing of New York’s Most Popular

New York and Byliner celebrated the launch of their new eBook yesterday with a live reading from three of the featured writers. “New York Magazine’s Most Popular” is the very first eBook that New York has published, and features 26 of the magazine’s most popular stories from the past five years, one of which is a book excerpt from John Heilemann and Mark Halperin’s Game Change. Web analytics were used to determine the most popular stories, and among them were Steve Fishman’s “The Madoff Tapes,” Vanessa Grigoriadis’ “Growing up Gaga” and Jennifer Senior’s “All Joy and No Fun.” These three writers read excerpts of their articles and talked about the writing process with New York editor-in-chief Adam Moss and Byliner.com editor Michael Solomon. Interestingly, Moss said that these pieces and their fellow most popular cohorts were not the ones that were most popular on a day-to-day basis. Rather, they had accumulated their popularity over time, and the content “was actually the more substantial, meatier stuff that we did.” Read more

New York’s The Cut Takes Aim at Vogue and Jezebel

New York’s fashion blog The Cut is getting set to expand, and so it is setting its sights high. According to The New York Times, The Cut is set to grow the week of August 13, backed by better coverage of fashion shows and new content overseen by the likes of former Gawker staffer Maureen O’Connor.

The goal? To take on Vogue and Jezebel. Adam Moss, New York’s editor-in-chief, told the Times that The Cut will be ”a high-end fashion magazine with the scrappiness of a blog.”

The Cut’s growth will surely generate more interest from fashion advertisers, who already like New York. The Times reports that fashion advertising rose by 34 percent this year, and beauty product ads increased by a whopping 100 percent.

New York’s Jessica Pressler Gets Monthly Business Column

New York has given Contributing Editor Jessica Pressler a new monthly business column, titled “The Money.” The feature will focus on the many big personalities in business, beginning with former Morgan Stanley CEO John Mack. In Pressler’s first piece for The Money, she gets Mack to delve into Wall Street’s scene and what he’s been doing since leaving the firm.

Adam Moss says that Pressler is a perfect fit for the new column. “She is especially good as a portraitist, and this column will play to that strength by telling its stories through individuals, some known, some not,” explains Moss. “She’ll be writing about finance and other realms of business, with business itself pretty broadly defined.”

Pressler has been with New York since 2007.
