Condé Nast Insisting They Still Feel Lucky

Per a quick follow-up item from Women’s Wear Daily media editor Alexandra Steigrad, the folks in charge at both Lucky magazine and Condé Nast are aggressively denying a Wednesday Page Six report that the magazine is about to be shelved.

The WWD-obtained notes by Lucky EIC Eva Chen, her publisher and Condé Nast CEO Charles Townsend all bang the reassurance drum, hard. Here for example is part of what Chen had to say:

Lucky‘s May issue was up nearly 20 percent and, for February through May, the publication is up two percent in paging, the editor said, explaining that they outpaced the competition, which logged a 6.2 percent decline in May and a 4.2 percent dip in the four-month period. Chen also noted that Lucky is up three percent in subscriptions from December of last year over December 2012.

Condé Nast Sponsors Opening Day of 9/11 Memorial Museum

Condé Nast is sponsoring the opening day of the National September 11 Memorial and Museum. When the center opens its doors on May 21, entrance will be free to anyone who has reserved their spot at 911memorial.org. Tickets for the event went on sale today.

“Condé Nast is privileged to play a role in the renaissance of an area that has held a distinct place in our nation’s history for centuries,” said Charles Townsend, Condé’s CEO, in a statement. “As the birthplace of New York City, the site of President Washington’s first inaugural address and the highly anticipated reopening of the WTC site, lower Manhattan has been — and will be — the home to many important events which shape the character of our country.”

Admission to the museum will be free for 9/11 families and 9/11 rescue workers who have registered.

Charles Townsend on Steering the Condé Nast Ship

CharlesTownsendThumbEmily Steel, who covers the marketing and media beats for the Financial Times, recently had the opportunity to sit down with 69-year-old Condé Nast chief executive officer Charles Townsend. The resulting feature is perfect MLK Monday holiday reading.

Townsend, a past commodore of the New York Yacht Club who named his own vessel Current Issue, sounds like he’s describing some very bad sailing weather when he talked to Steel about the past few years at the Condé Nast helm (he came on board in 2004). Challenges come “from every direction” and the horizon is “so different now.”

Townsend tells Steel that he loves it when creative director Anna Wintour previews upcoming issues with him. He also notes that the publishing company was a little late to the Internet party:

Townsend admits that it has taken a long time for Condé Nast to develop the right attitude towards the Web. “We did it the hard way,” he says. “We learnt with black eyes and bloody noses.”

Anna Wintour: Editor Assassin

Editors at underperforming Condé Nast magazines beware: Anna Wintour is coming for you. WWD reports that when Condé Nast Traveler staffers gathered to hear that Klara Glowczewska — the longtime editor of the magazine — had been fired, many noted Wintour’s presence in the room. Glowczewska was the second editor fired since Wintour was named artistic director, signaling that she’s not afraid to pull the trigger when people aren’t getting it done.

Thomas Wallace, Condé’s editorial director, was at the meeting as well. He said Glowczewska was fired because Traveler hadn’t recovered from the recession like other brands had, and that meant “Something needed to change.” Wintour was a pivotal part of that decision. “Anna’s not afraid to make changes,” a source told WWD. “She made [Charles Townsend and Bob Sauerberg] comfortable that it was OK, that she could find the right people to take over.”

Wintour signed off on Pilar Guzmán, who understands Wintour’s quickness with the ax. “Anna in her new role brings her incredible expertise, visual and editorial and incredible sensibility,” Guzmán said. That’s some incredibly smart ass kissing.

Charles Townsend Extends Contract with Condé Nast

Charles Townsend, CEO of Condé Nast, has extended his contract with the company. The New York Post reports that the deal is for at least two more years.

Townsend has been with Condé since 1994, when he joined as publisher of Glamour. He was named executive VP of the company the next year, and COO in 1999. Townsend has served as Condé’s CEO since 2004.

Prior to his time with Condé, Townsend was with The New York Times Company. From 1986 to 1994 he served as the president and CEO of the Times Company’s Women’s Magazine Publishing Division, which published Family Circle, McCall’s and more.

Connie Anne Phillips Returns to Condé as VP, Publisher of Glamour

Well what do you know, the rumors were true: Connie Anne Phillips is indeed returning to Condé Nast. Phillips has been named vice president and publisher of Glamour. Phillips was InStyle’s publisher for four years, but spent 14 years at Vogue.

Phillips will replace Bill Wackermann, who is headed to Condé Nast Traveler, where he’ll serve as executive vice president and publishing director. That’s a reunion as well, as Wackerman once served as Traveler’s associate publisher.

Charles Townsend, CEO of Condé, was excited about Phillips’ return to the company. In a statement, he said “With Connie Anne and editor-in-chief Cindi Leive at the helm, Glamour will be unstoppable.” Well damn.

Phillips and Wackermann’s appointments are both effective July 8.

Graydon Carter’s Contract Negotiations Stall, Possible Successors Discussed

Graydon Carter, the 63-year-old editor-in-chief of Vanity Fair, is currently negotiating a new contract with Condé Nast. According to The New York Post, the main hold-up to getting the deal done is that Carter’s lawyer — Allan Grubman — is pushing for a signing bonus and a raise for Carter.

The other issue at hand is that Carter isn’t sure how much longer he wants to stay at Vanity Fair. He has already been the editor of the magazine for 21 years, so you can hardly blame him. Carter also has other interests, such his overseeing his popular restaurants and producing films.

Charles Townsend, Condé’s CEO, told the Post that all is well and “There are no plans for anyone to succeed Graydon at Vanity Fair.” Which means, of course, it’s time to guess who is succeeding Carter at Vanity Fair! Below are some names that have been circulated:

Anna Wintour Takes on New Role at Condé Nast

Anna Wintour, the famed editor-in-chief of Vogue, has been named artistic director of Condé Nast, a new role at the company. Wintour, who became editor of Vogue since 1988, will now oversee all of Condé’s brands, something S.I. Newhouse Jr. had done for 30 years. Newhouse recently began dialing back his responsibilities at Condé.

Despite this, it’s unclear exactly what being an “artistic director” entails. Here is how Charles Townsend, Condé Nast’s CEO, explains Wintour’s new position:

The establishment of an artistic director is a reflection of our commitment to preserve and champion all that exists ‘Only at Condé Nast.’ In today’s business environment, it is critical to promote and foster our established creative authority. This is the ideal time to leverage Anna’s extraordinary vision and leadership to amplify and elevate the profile of Condé Nast U.S. both domestically and abroad. Wintour will (of course) remain as editor of Vogue and editorial director of Teen Vogue.

Charles Townsend Has Rosy Outlook for Condé

Charles Townsend, CEO of Condé Nast, has seen the future of the company, and it is bright. Speaking at the Paley Center, Townsend said he expects revenue for the company’s digital video business to reach $10 to $15 million and from there it will go “through the moon.”

Condé is upping rate bases for several brands next year, too. Townsend hopes that the additional circulation will give the company more influence with advertisers.

“Our print business, even in the worst moment, continues to grow and the margins are sharper and the gross profit margins are mouthwatering,” said Townsend, according to WWD. Mmm… gross profit margins. Someone pass the hot sauce.

Also, no one tell all those people Condé just cut about those fantastic margins.

Lucy Kriz Named VP, Publisher of W

Lucy Kriz has been named vice president and publisher of W. Kriz was most recently senior executive director at Condé Nast Media Group, where she oversaw brand sales for several key categories. Prior to that, Kriz served as associate publisher for Details.

Lucy’s career as a sales executive with extensive experience in fashion, beauty and luxury make her an ideal choice to lead W,” said Condé Nast’s CEO, Charles Townsend, in a statement. “Her strong client contacts, proven track record and deep passion for this brand will enable her to lift the market position of to an even higher level.”

Kriz’s appointment is effective immediately.
