Barbara Walters’ Final Scheduled Television Appearance Announced (ABC News)
Almost a year after she announced her plan to depart daily television, Barbara Walters is preparing to say farewell. Her last day co-hosting The View, a program that she created, will be May 16, and ABC will air a two-hour special highlighting her life and career that night, from 9-11 p.m. ET. TVNewser Walters will continue to executive produce The View and will contribute to ABC News as the news warrants. THR / The Live Feed The ABC News headquarters in New York City will also be named in her honor, as the Barbara Walters Building, during a dedication ceremony this spring. Walters acknowledged that she’s sad to leave but that “it feels right for me,” repeating what she’s previously said about wanting to leave before people complained about her being on television too long. Reuters Walters, 84, has suffered from health problems recently, including a concussion after she fainted and hit her head last year and a bout of chickenpox. In 2010, she had open heart surgery. Since announcing her retirement, she hosted 20 Years of The 10 Most Fascinating People, the final show of her yearly special program about intriguing personalities. During her long career, Walters was known for her interviews on U.S. television with world leaders including Cuba’s Fidel Castro, Britain’s Margaret Thatcher, Saddam Hussein of Iraq and every U.S. president since Richard Nixon. She also interviewed celebrities such as Elizabeth Taylor, Angelina Jolie and Tom Cruise. Mediaite Walters joined ABC in 1976, when she famously became the first female anchor ever on an evening news program. She later became a co-host of 20/20 and launched The View in 1997.

Facebook Bets $2 Billion on Virtual Reality (Financial Times)
Facebook is making a $2 billion bet that virtual reality headsets will be the next big social platform after computers and smartphones, with the sudden acquisition of Oculus VR. The deal marks an unexpected move by the world’s largest social network into the hardware business, at a time when arch-rival Google is investing in robots, its own Google Glass headset and other long-term ventures. Facebook believes that virtual reality’s applications could extend beyond gaming into entertainment and education. AllFacebook The transaction is expected to close during the second quarter, and it is comprised of $400 million in cash, 23.1 million shares of Facebook class-A common stock (worth $1.6 billion based on the average closing price of $69.35 for the 20 trading days leading up to March 21) and $300 million in potential cash and stock based on reaching certain unspecified milestones. Facebook said in its announcement that more than 75,000 orders have been placed for Oculus Rift development kits, adding that it plans to help Oculus expand into verticals including communications and media. Adweek The Irvine, Calif.-based company’s Rift headset covers the eyes of users and plants them in a virtual reality world in which they can play games, watch movies and interact in new ways. GigaOM Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that he sees Oculus as an opportunity to move beyond the console and toward ubiquitous computing. He doesn’t expect Facebook to make money off of selling Oculus hardware; instead, it might become a ubiquitous world for communication that might contain advertising. “Imagine enjoying a court side seat at a game, studying in a classroom of students and teachers all over the world or consulting with a doctor face-to-face — just by putting on goggles in your home,” Zuckerberg explained. Bloomberg The deal follows a spate of acquisitions that Facebook has used to build up its mobile business. Last month, the company agreed to purchase messaging application WhatsApp for $19 billion. In 2012, Facebook bought mobile photo-sharing program Instagram for about $700 million. Facebook had $11.4 billion in cash and investments at the end of 2013.

George Takei YouTube Series Kicks Off with a Look at Google Glass

The busy, busy 76-year-old Star Trek alum has yet another way to interface with fans: Takei’s Take. The YouTube series officially launched today with the actor’s thoughts on Google Glass.

In an interview with readwrite.com tech and culture writer Adriana Lee, Takei revealed the rather surprising genesis of his latest media venture:

“The AARP (American Association of Retired Persons) came to me. The idea of social media is to introduce people to new experiences and enrich their lives with these experiences. The AARP demographic is active in social media. But I found that their children and grandchildren are Star Trek fans, and so I told AARP that we could reach a wide demographic of people. Not just the 50-plus, but those in the middle-age sector and also teenagers. So we decided to go ahead with this project, Takei’s Take.”

Rolling Stone Wonders About Google Glass

It’s not quite the futuristic picture painted in Steven Spielberg‘s 2002 adaptation of Phillip K. Dick short story “The Minority Report.” But it’s pretty close:

A world where everyone on the street is instantly uploading to YouTube whatever they’re looking at will be a world where everyone is both continuously filming and being filmed, where everyone is both voyeur and object.

Elle Launches Google Glass App

Google Glass is stupid. If you wear Glass, there is a 100 percent chance you will lose friends. The tech blogs and Google won’t tell you this, which is why we are. FishbowlNY cares about you. Now with that being said, we understand why brands want to get in on Glass. Nothing wrong with trying to profit off of idiots. This is exactly why Elle has created an app for Glass.

Elle’s app is significant because this is a pioneering effort. Hearst is now the first magazine company to create and launch a Glass app. The details are a bit vague as to what, exactly, the Elle app will do, but here’s what Hearst had to say about that:

Elle Glassware curates the best content from Elle’s most widely read and shared sections online, including Elle Dispatch, a fashion and culture news blog that provides read-aloud excerpts and bundled photos and video; daily fashion inspiration from Street Chic; magazine-like photo Lookbooks that Glass users can swipe through; and horoscopes, which allow the user to change astrological signs within the Glassware. While using the Glassware, users can share articles and photos with contacts and create reading lists and shopping wish lists that can be revisited later from a mobile or desktop device.

Okay, the last part — taking pictures of things you want to buy while using Glass — is sort of cool. But let’s be honest, you can already do that with your phone. We know, “Glass is way different than that!” Sure, sure it is.

We support Elle’s decision to launch a Glass app, but please understand we will never support using Glass. But hey, to each his own.
