Hollywood Reporter Lists 35 ‘Most Powerful People in New York Media’

It’s list time! The Hollywood Reporter’s annual “most powerful people in New York media” list is out, and it features some staples (Roger Ailes) and some newcomers (Nick Denton). The list, now in its fourth year, honors “The men and women who shape the media message and interpret the sweep of the culture,” according to THR.

People love lists like this. It doesn’t really mean anything, yet everyone will be sure to humblebrag about being included. Media people love patting themselves on the back, and THR is giving them an open invitation to do so.

Gabriel Sherman Talks Fox News and Roger Ailes at New America NYC

ShermanFolkenflik

“It’s not a company, it’s a cult around him,” said Gabriel Sherman, talking about Roger Ailes and Fox News to a packed room in Soho Tuesday night.

Sherman had come to New America NYC to discuss The Loudest Voice in the Room, his controversial book about Roger Ailes and how he created one of America’s most successful media empires. Ailes is a brilliant political consultant who built a news organization out of fear, said Sherman. And he argues that atmosphere informs Fox’s ethics and reporting at every level, from top anchors like Shep Smith to low level producers.

“They live in terror of him, but they hang on his every word,” he said. “People are terrified to speak his name or speak ill of him because they’re worried that the phones are tapped.”

Time Magazine Names Its First Female Managing Editor (NYT)
Nancy Gibbs was named the new managing editor of Time magazine on Tuesday, the first woman to become the top editor at the newsweekly in its 90-year history. Gibbs, who started at Time as a fact-checker 28 years ago, succeeds Richard Stengel, who is leaving to work for the State Department after seven years in the job. She was most recently Stengel’s deputy. The Wrap “I cannot think of a more perfect person than Nancy Gibbs to lead Time,” said Time, Inc. editor-in-chief Martha Nelson. “With Nancy at the helm, I expect Time to continue to flourish and grow on every platform.” WWD Gibbs’ first order of business, she said in an interview following her appointment, is a relaunch of Time.com in November that she said prepares it to fight off the competition. In the context of describing the new site, which is led by Edward Felsenthal, formerly of The Daily Beast, Gibbs also mounted a defense of the relevance of the weekly. Adweek While Gibbs said that she was more than content as a writer — and plans to continue writing, both for the magazine and books, as managing editor — the opportunity to play a larger role at Time was hard to turn down. FishbowlNY Gibbs was previously deputy managing editor and ranks as one of the most published writers in Time‘s history. She also holds the distinction of having written the most Time cover stories and has co-authored, with colleague Michael Duffy, the presidential histories The President’s Club: Inside the World’s Most Exclusive Fraternity (2012) and The Preacher and the Presidents: Billy Graham in the White House (2007). Time Gibbs: “I am committed to using every new tool — and those not yet invented — to engage readers in a conversation with the world’s best thinkers about what works, what’s smart, what’s scary, what’s stirring, and I will always invite you to help us, challenge us, correct us, join us.”

Alec Baldwin Set to Host New MSNBC Primetime Show (Mediaite)
Mediaite has learned from a senior source in the cable news industry with knowledge of MSNBC’s programming that actor Alec Baldwin is getting his own weekly show in MSNBC’s primetime lineup. According to our source, the so far untitled show will air Fridays at 10 p.m. ET and will feature a large dose of Baldwin’s outspoken liberal politics. The Atlantic Wire Currently, The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell runs at 10 p.m. Monday to Thursday on the network, meaning Baldwin wouldn’t cut into any other personality on the channel’s time. Instead, the actor’s rumored show would replace a series of documentaries on prisons. THR / The Live Feed Reporting has also emerged as a recent passion of Baldwin’s. He hosts a weekly WNYC podcast of interviews called Here’s the Thing. And HBO will premiere his documentary, Seduced and Abandoned, later this year. He and James Toback filmed the project, which features interviews with actors and directors about the risks and rewards of big budget filmmaking, at the Cannes Film Festival in 2012.

Megyn Kelly Moving to Primetime at Fox News (TVNewser)
Megyn Kelly is moving to primetime for Fox News Channel, the network announced Tuesday afternoon. But to which hour is not known. Since 2010, Kelly has anchored the two-hour afternoon show America Live. “Megyn is an exceptional talent who has successfully filled and surpassed each role we have given her at the network,” Fox News chairman and CEO Roger Ailes said in a statement. The Washington Post / Erik Wemple Just how Fox News will install Kelly in primetime is a matter of great mystery, given that its stars in the various time slots — including Bill O’Reilly, Sean Hannity and Greta Van Susteren — appear to be locked down on contracts. NYT Fox did not announce a specific show for Kelly or whose place she would be taking in the network’s primetime lineup. However, speculation has centered on Van Susteren, the 10 p.m. anchor. Van Susteren recently signed an extension of her Fox contract but her future role is not certain at this point. TheWrap / MediaAlley According to an insider with knowledge of the situation, Van Susteren approached CNN chief Jeff Zucker about a possible job at her former cable network last spring. Though they met several times, CNN ultimately wasn’t interested in her. The Atlantic Wire The only option we see is a co-hosting gig, or perhaps they dump the 11 p.m. O’Reilly Factor re-run for a brand-new late night show. But late-night is not primetime and any way you slice that (8-to-11 or 6-to-11), it seems Fox News has more highly-paid hosts than there are hours in the day. Let the battle begin.

Discovery Reports Higher First-Quarter Earnings (B&C)
Discovery Communications reported higher first-quarter earnings as international growth offset a decline in digital distribution revenue. First-quarter net income rose 4 percent to $231 million, or 63 cents a share, from $221 million, or 57 cents a share. The Wrap / The Box Discovery also said it expects Oprah Winfrey’s OWN to meet its previously stated goal of breaking even in cash flow in the second half of this year, Discovery president and CEO David Zaslav said. OWN viewership was up 3 percent in its key women 25-54 demographic in the first quarter, even though the first quarter of 2012 included OWN’s highest-rated broadcast, Winfrey’s interview with Whitney Houston’s daughter. THR The latest figure was impacted by a range of factors in addition to what the company called “the strong underlying operating performance in the current year’s quarter.” Among the items affecting the latest profit were a $92 million gain from the consolidation of results for Discovery Japan and $46 million of improved equity earnings, but also higher equity-based compensation expenses and a $59 million loss from “hedging activities primarily associated with the acquisition of the SBS Nordic operations.” Read more
